Good idea on fan bearing.

If necessary I could swap the fans round - the problem only on LHS and if it transfers to other side with fan then that would suggest fan problem.

But when I push rad/shroud back I can get the interference on LHS just turning blades by hand, though only 1 or 2 blades hit the shroud when I try this.

Maybe the problem is unrelated and the shroud has deformed over time. But the good news is eventually the blades/shroud will wear enough so that they don't hit anymore

See the picture below that kinda illustrates how my fan shroud clacking problem happened. Like most perplexing issues it wasn't just one problem.

1) The rubber dampening brackets were very loose. Inducing a slight bend on both brackets helped limit fore and aft movement. This helped because there was a lot of slop with radiator sliding around but was not the silver bullet.

2) As depicted in the picture, the solder joint that fastens the radiator top deck that is connected to the shroud moves +/- 3/16in relative to the radiator core. Someday I'll have enough courage to re-solder this joint but nothing leaks and the clacking has stopped since I slid the joint forward.

3) What can't really be seen in the picture is an interference problem with the power steering reservoir feeder line hose clamp. The PO had it oriented so that the fan blade, which nominally protrudes from the shroud by maybe 1/8", would hit the fan blade when items 1 and 2 slid towards the FW.

Examining the fan blade showed exactly the "damn" contact point on the hose clamp. Instituting fixes 1 and 3 stopped the problem. I'm waiting on item 2 until the radiator officially fails.

Hope this helps!

I've only had problem since installing new PS reservoir!

Will look at that clamp today - I remember moving it so it was in more convenient position to tighten...

Thanks!

Case closed thanks to NC928S4!

Pushed rad back, and saw fan blade could now hit bolt on that PS clamp! Doh

Stupid of me not to realise last thing I did was significant, and to think blades were striking shroud when they were hitting that clamp.

Had to go out with family, but later will loosen that clamp and rotate out of harms way.

Thanks for all suggestions to fix this, and for the lesson to first think about last thing you did!

FWIW the right side fan can also hit on the AC low pressure line,
a gentle bend should move it out of the way

Thanks Stan,

I haven't had that problem with AC line, but useful to know if it should crop up.

On the LHS rotating the supply line clamp on PS reservoir clockwise - and clamping the reservoir so that line is well out of fan blade's way too - was the fix. I removed the shim from mount too - like things original!
