Steering Column Lock Pictures?
Anyone have good pictures, details, write-up of the ignition key/lock steering column lock configuration... assembly / dissassembly etc

I did my ign switch last year, but dont have pics. The electrical switch is retained in the casting by 2 grub screws or similar - one of mine was a grub, the other an ordinary philips cheese head screw. You might be able to pull the connecting plug with the botom cover removed, but I dont recall if both screws are accessible with the pod in place - from what I have read it seems they might be.
Whats the issue ?

I am considering removing the steering column lock and would like to know how hard that would be to do. Ignition switch is still fine (and original) no need for changes there.
I assume that at least the lock barrel needs to come out - but I assume Porsche did not make it too easy, the door lock protection plates were quite impressive.
I don't think the steering column lock adds that much security and I have a project that requires it to be gone... no hurry - this is a long term deal - but I want to understand the scope - I may just do it when I next go into the pod...

Alan, if you wish to disable the column lock
Put key in ign and turn to ON position. (you can then turn back off as the lock is held until key is pulled out)
Then drill straight up through the bar going from the ign lock to steering column. (Try to drill in the center of the bar) drill all the way through and then insert a roll pin through the hole you just drilled. This will hold the pin out of the wheel and prevent it from locking the wheel

Are you looking into a keyless entry - push button start/stop system? The steering column lock is the one thing that has been, kind of, holding me back on that project.

Too early to go into project details - but something similar to that.
Thanks Colin - a reversible steering lock lock defeat would be nice... seems that may be doable with care and an apropriate de-locking bolt/nut

Alan,
If you do drill through and install a roll pin, it would be simple to undo by just punching out the roll pin.
I dont believe that there is enough material there to drill a large enough hole for a bolt/nut and maintain a reasonable amount of strength. Plus a roll pin really would never be seen to know it wasnt stock.

Colin - do you have an approx idea of the diameter of the locking pin? - I was guessing it was about 6mm or so..?

Roll pins come in any size you can really think of. There is very little force pushing that pin out.
A 1/16" roll pin would do. Just drill a hole .062-.065" and then tap it in with a hammer. Regular steel 1/16" roll pin has a shear weight of 430lbs......
I have a column out of the car at the shop. I can take a picture of what it looks like
