Default Dual Auxilary Power Mod

So I didnt like how the power outlet was underneath the ash tray door. It was ackward and didnt like the look either. Then if you have to plug your phone in and something else like a fuzz buster for a road trip your screwed. So heres my solution.

For a manual car that is still a challenging location due to the shifter throw - esp for the bigger charger adapters...

I like the passenger side of the console better - but having dual outlets is nice - a couple of USB charger ports would be nice too... these days that covers most of what gets plugged in...

I run a triple on the inboard side of the passenger parcel tray. Out of the way yet easily accessible.

I just bought some of these dual-usb chargers.

My S4's don't have rear AC, and I've got an extra clock surround where a PO had an alarm LED by the clock where the AC controls are - my plan is to drill a 19mm hole and flush mount one of these chargers there on the passenger side of the clock, wiring it to the cigarette lighter (I'll remove the tangs and pin and wire some pigtails directly to the internals of it).

I'm also going to mod the charger so it charges android devices at full speed - In stock form, most ebay chargers are 2A capable, but use iphone/ipad charging signalling so will only fast-charge apple devices.

I put a pigtail where the amp used to be. flop it out when we need it for a trip with an inverter, hide it otherwise. I like that USB nubbin solution, though. How are you going to get it to get out the amps to charge bigger devices? my blackberry won't charge on most cheapo ebay setups.

Or you could go with one of these (admittedly significantly more expensive solutions):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Blue-Sea-Dua...cbb603&vxp=mtr

I do already have one on the way (from last week) so this thread is timely - I also have the Blue Sea outlets - so it matches. Its about 10X the $ of the Chinese plug ins - but it panel mounts, has blade connectors, a cover and is a very good brand - I have many Blue Sea marine items - they are all excellent quality - so I have high hopes...

I may also use the sill cover where the amp was for this.

Can't beat the Blue Sea products. They're just up the road from me in Bellingham Wa. Going to use them for my sailboat rejuvenation.

I'm not sure on blackberry signalling, but for android micro-usb devices (most of them - samsung galaxy tabs are slightly different), the device recognises a dedicated charging port by checking the data pins, and will switch to "(AC)" charging mode if the pins are shorted to each other, at which point it will charge faster.

You can make the modification either to the port itself, or to a USB cable - I prefer to do the port, so I don't have to worry about family members plugging the wrong cable into a PC and blowing the USB power circuit (i.e. phone tries to suck 2A out of a 500mA PC usb port).

"Apple" charging ports (i.e. most ebay ones) provide differential voltage on the data pins - so to make the mod for android devices, I just remove the SMD resistors to cut the power to the data pins, and then bridge them.

2A TOTAL....not per PORT. i spent 30 minutes the other day with a magnifying glass reading then etching the amperage into the plastic of half a dozen chargers laying around our house. Cameras...Ipods...Pads....Andorid phones...tablets...bluetooth ear sets.. etc etc My kids and wife would just grab any and try to charge their Ipods. They are all labled now in the nigthly curfew "charging basket" If there isnt enoguh amperage, it wont charge when plugged in.

"dad...my IPAD is broken..it wont charge"
