It appears there is enough interest so I will look into making a small batch.

I guess black is the most suitable color. It matches the rest of the bowden cable assembly and the color should be fade resistant. Black silicone should be widely available and since I have only one mold, I need a silicone which cures reasonably fast.

I will see what is available in reasonable quantities and reasonable price.

One thing to be ironed out is the shipping. It is not really economically to ship individual sets from Europe to the US. Maybe some sort of group buy would be the best way.

Gord: the caps (should) prevent water and dirt ingress into the bowden cable.

Kurt

I wanna say Thank You in advance for offering these up to the community.

I think you'll find many more will jump on board as this progresses.

A group buy is a Great idea, you could mail one large batch out and we can distribute them once state side.

I'd volunteer to do the leg work of getting them out to everyone if need be, or you could drop Roger a line and see if this would be something he's interested in carrying. Of course in that event you may need to invest in more then one mold

Thumbs up!

Thanks for your kind words and for offering to do the distribution!

In the past I was benefiting from similar activities (stainless steel y-connector, gas cap pawl etc.) so I am happy to contribute something, too.

Is it looks right now, most of the non-dental silicone cures too slow (within 24 hours) so I need more than one mold anyway.

The snag is that I destroyed my original cap when I took the mold. It might be possible to use one of silicone caps made in the first mold for fabricating a second mold, I will have to try that.

Let me look into the details and make some tests and we'll see how to proceed.

just a little update: it seems to be not so simple to buy black 2 pack silicone which cures in a couple of minutes other than the extremely expensive dental stuff.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a specific product or an application were such silicones would be used?

Seen this stuff? It's fairly new, many uses... never tried it, but it looks kinda neat for a bunch of stuff for our cars...

Hi Kurt
Please add me to the list - I have been thinking about this for a while - I will take two sets and happy to pay the freight to New Zealand. Great work!

Gordo: thanks for the link, I am aware of this type of silicone. Problem is that it is like clay, I will need something with low viscosity to fill it into the mold. Also, as most air curing single pack silicones, it won't cure as long as it's in the mold as solvents need to evaporate for the curing process.
So I need a two pack material. I found something that is used for taking molds for artwork that might be suitable and I am waiting for the distributor to come back with some more technical information.

I realized that I also need to find a wire for the circular clip. The one I used was made from orthodontic appliance wire, which is ideally suited but (as everything dental) quite expensive. But there should be suitable stainless wire available for a lower price.

BTW: I apologize to the Ethan for hijacking your thread BIG TIME!
If you want, I open a new thread but if you don't mind, I will keep on posting about the progress here.

I also tried out the mold with some past-due-date dental silicon and it turned out that the yield is lousy...about 50% or worse.

I made a second mold (well, actually I made five but only one was any good) so at least I can make a pair in one go.

Fitting the caps is also extremely fiddly. Playing around with that stuff brought back some memories from ten years ago when I made and fitted my own set and it was a PITA even back then.

I already found some cheaper 0.7mm stainless wire that should do the trick for the rings.

I will keep trying and see if it is feasible to do a reasonably large batch.

To get a better feeling for the numbers, it would be helpful if everyone who posted interest could edit his post and add the exact number of caps wanted.

AT cars need 4 caps, manuals only 3 (no cable to the trans).

Thanks!
