Default Planning a T-Tube Rebuild; suggested Auto Trans/TT "WYAIT" items to consider?

Team, the time is coming to have my Torque Tube removed and rebuilt. Going to have Constantines Bearings & Super Clamp installed as part of the process, just waiting on his new stock to arrive in January. I have an Auto Trans fluid leak, so its time to have all of these items addressed.

Car is a 1988/MY89 928S4 Auto with 170,000km.

As a part of the process, Im starting to gather my parts list and wanted to confirm what Torque Tube and Auto Transmission "WYAIT" tasks I should consider. As it stands, Ive got an oil/trans leak coming from what appears to the the Torque convertor seal, so thats a given. This is what I am thinking, but im a novice so would appreciate your input:

- Rebuild Torque Tube with Constantine Super bearings

- Replace Torque Tube carrier bearings

- Replace Torque Tube Bolts

- Install the Constantine Superclamp

- Replace Crankshaft rear main seal

- Replace Transmission mounts

- Replace Torque Convertor bearings

- Replace Torque convertor seal

- Replace AutoTrans filter/gastket

What other obvious items should I be thinking about in terms of the Trans or the TT ? What am I missing ?

Im going to source the parts myself and have the work done for me, I just dont have the time nor the space/hoist to do this work sad to say. If I can gather as many parts myself that will help keep the cost down. I am assuming around 20-20 hours labour to do this by someone who knows 928's, is that a reasonable guess or optimistic on my behalf?

While the Exhaust is dropped, im probably going to have an x-pipe installed.

Appreciate your input

Dave

^^^+1^^^

Also consider replacing the B3 clutch discs and steels (reverse gear) and rebuilding the B3 piston with new seals and return springs/retaining plate. Depending on mileage be prepared to replace the B1 (front) brake band. I would also install the upgraded B2 piston if not already done along with renewing the trans cooling hoses.

This is also an ideal time to do a rear suspension refresh.

Check your flexible ATF line ends where they run from underneath the TT tunnel back to the tranny. (they're hardlines most of the way, with hose fittings at the ends) They're probably leaking and impossible to get to with the other items installed. Definately a WYAIT item in my book.

Anyone - What are the symptoms for torque tube going bad?! I understand the bearing wear out....my 87s4 as developed a "death rattle" at low rpms; mainly when stopped or at very slow speeds. A bud of mine who is much smarter than me when it comes to 928s suggested drive shaft/torque tube...was the issue. thanks...r

For the Trans service:
Get a new Trans Fluid tank cap seal along w/ a new "O" ring for the fill tube (tank to pan) and new Boden "O" ring seal.
+ 1 on the other suggestions as I too will be going down this path.

Please keep us updated on what you find.

And while the drive shafts are out, replace the driveshaft seals together with the input shaft seal.

that rattle could be the rear flex plate rivets to torque converter.
Many replace them with bolts.
You could remove the lower bell housing, check front flex plate and adjust.
If you unbolt the flex plate from the flywheel the you could feel play in the shaft.

Loosen both front and rear pinch collar, then tighten to 66 ft/lbs. That may get rid of the rattle - it did for mine as the rear clamp was not tightened to spec.

Aside from pan gasket and hoses, my view is that further work on transmission is a separate job entirely.

Great time to do it, especially if your shop intends to remove it to access the TT.

You might want to ensure that a specialist transmission mechanic or shop does the review / repair. And if that is the case, let that transmission specialist test and inspect the car before disassembly begins.
