Default Thinking of a new battery.....

with the new IMI starter she cranks fine when its warm out, but crappy when cold. SOOO time for a new battery i think. stick with stock lead brick, or go optima? (i know the optima is more work, but smaller)

thoughts?

IIRC the Optima's are a little to tall for the 928 battery box. Type into the search box above: "Best battery?" T

Are there other things you would like to store in the battery box that require a smaller battery to free up room?

If it is weight savings you're after just run with half a tank of fuel and stick with the "stock lead brick". Life is much easier that way.

I just purchased an AGM Super Start (Absorbent Glass Matt) w/ 760 CCA, from O'Reilly about $150.00.
This does not have a vent, so no liquid inside, I think its the same technology as an Optima just in a standard package.
For an 86.5 you need to order one for an S4 as the exhaust routs the same and the batt box is shorter.

Part Number: 48EXTAGM, and a perfect fit using the stock batt hold down clamp.

The stock battery is just fine... if there are still issues with a new one its the wiring or the starter
(or the alternator if it only happens after a while)...

What are the advantages of the AGM battery?

Does anyone have long term experience with them?

Some have complained of Duralast but my experience hasn't been too bad. At least the warranty is decent when they fail too soon. The hardest part is getting Autozone to acknowledge that it is in fact bad.

The local price for a regular battery is $135 and the AGM is $165. Why would it be worth $30 more?

I had a couple of 8Ds on my boat and they out performed the gel and lead acid batteries for longevity and acceptance (fast charging). They don't outgas. They're deep cycle. They can be mounted in any orientation. They don't deliver the CCA that a lead acid of the same class will. They cost more.

In my view all batteries go bad and with decent maintenance (keeping in charged) they all last about the same. I find Advance AUt battiers hard to beat since they always have discounts so the battery cost is less than $100.

Reg price $136

Discount coupon thread -$40

At any given time, Advance Auto has some sort of 40% online coupon code. I find them using slickdeals.com

From Wikipedia

"Many modern motorcycles and ATVs on the market use AGM batteries to reduce likelihood of acid spilling during cornering, vibration, or after accidents, and for packaging reasons. The lighter, smaller battery can be installed at an odd angle if needed for the design of the motorcycle. Due to the higher manufacturing costs compared with flooded lead–acid batteries, AGM batteries are currently used on premium vehicles. As vehicles become heavier and equipped with more electronic devices such as navigation, stability control, and premium stereos, AGM batteries are being employed to lower vehicle weight and provide better electrical reliability compared with flooded lead–acid batteries.

New 5 series BMWs from March 2007 incorporate AGM batteries in conjunction with devices for recovering brake energy using regenerative braking and computer control to ensure the alternator charges the battery when the car is decelerating. Vehicles used in auto racing may use AGM batteries due to their vibration resistance."

Over the summer I replaced the battery in the '85 as it finally would not hold a charge after me (my fault) running it down.
I replace it with the same one I had purchased from NAPPA(their best and it is a big heavy bastage) about six years ago, the counter guy said "no it wasn't six years ago, it was ten! And I wouldn't expect the same as they do not usually last that long".

I do keep them all on a charger when not in use, as whenever a battery is not charging it is discharging.
So let's see how they both hold up

The AGM battery from Oreilly's is made by East Penn/ Deka. It's not a lightweight (45 lbs) &
has 760 cranking amps & is a direct fit. specs here:
