Just saw this on the hemmings website.

http://www.hemmings.com/classicoil/

Default Another engine oil thread

I was reading Hemmings and it seems that they have developed zinc rich oil for older cars.

I have never used that oil but I have had excellent luck with Shell Rotella 5w-40 (good zinc content) diesel oil in my car. I run it in one of my daily 928's for 40k miles so far and when I had the valve covers off last the camshafts still looked great with no noticeable accelerated wear. I think that speaks volumes.

forgot to add:
I had two oil analysis done when using this oil and they both came back great. If I remember right there was a petroleum engineer on this forum (Doug?) that owned a 928 who did a series of tests and also recommended this oil.

I have heard so many people say not to use oil made for diesel engines in the gas engine due to too much detergents or too strong detergents that I have always shyed away from them. use what the manual calls for .....nothing more or less and you will be safe.....

Interesting...because Shell Rotella T6 5W40 meets API SM specifications (oil for gasoline engines).

Shell Rotella T6 5w40 and Mobil 5w-40 Turbo Diesel Truck are unique diesel oils that are also rated for gasoline engines.

I use the Mobil 5w-40 in my gas cars that call for that weight.

The analysis numbers are all that matter.

I too use Mobil 1 Synthetic Turbo Diesel 5W-40 in my 6.0 L gas engine GMC Sierra Pickup, my 5.6L gas Infinit QX56 and was using it in both my 997 C2S 3.8L cars (because of the high Phosporous & ZDDP content). Based on some intput from other 997 Forum members and Jake Raby at Flat-6 in GA, I've changed those 2 cars over to Motul X-cess 8100. Never had any issues with the Mobil 1 in them though, even at 220 F still shows 5 bar on the gauge at anything above idle. Those guys concern with the M1 TD truck oil was it's sheer properties at high RPMs since diesel engines run at much lower RPMs so I still use it in my truck and SUV as they rarely see more than 4,000-4,500 RPMs.

In both my '74 914 and my Indmar Marine Engine, I use Mobil 1 15W-50 (used to use the Extended Performance version but they don't make that one anymore).

In my SC 928, baased on the advice of Carl at 928MS, I'll be running a conventional oil or partial synthetic as he says some of the internal seals need a petroleum based oil to remain swolen and seal well, whereas, when exposed to a full synthetic, the seals shrink and then you get leaks. Anyone have any recommendations on a really good conventional or partial synthetic for this application?
