Default 1985 Vacuum

Well, I've been chasing vacuum issues all over this car. One of my issues is that the hood is not original to the car and doesn't have the correct diagram sticker. In combination with the PO band-aid fixes and aging, cracking emissions hoses used for vacuum (original?) I'm up a creek. I have an '85 AT (US).

My specific questions:

1. In the first picture is there supposed to be vacuum on both nipples? I'm not even sure what to call this sensor--it looks like it's on a heater valve of some sort.

2. Although I haven't dropped the exhaust and heat shields, yet, I can't find the vacuum lead coming from the transaxle. Where does it enter the engine compartment and should it be tied to anything? Is it a flexible connector at that point or a hard line?

3. In the second picture there's a 4-way split with one of the directions plugged. Where do the two lines going through the fender go? Is that a factory junction? I assume there's a charcoal canister hidden somewhere in the fender? I also haven't yet removed that fender liner to peek.

4. An somewhat-related question -- what does the adjustment dial on the side of the inline regulator coming from the air pump do?

Finally, if anyone has a page they're willing to scan from me from the factory manuals which show the '85-'86 vacuum routing it would be much appreciated.

1)thermo valve- should have 2 nipples, that have 2 vac lines connect to.
2)should be hard plastic vac line that comes in the rear center of the firewall.
It runs on the top of the TT.
3)That is a correct factory set up with the test plug on the bottom. It goes into fender for cruise control and vacuum tank.
4) I do not know
You should be able to search and find vac diagram on this site, or I am sure someone will post it.
You can go back to the original factory set up, or buy an upgraded vacuum kit from 928 r us which comes with the lines, elbows, and connectors, and reroutes the lines.
On their web site their is a vac diagram. It is pretty simple either way.

Excellent, thanks for the help. I did a search but didn't find the '85-'86 diagrams. I even went on some of the parts sites that I've used for fuse diagrams, e.g., in the past but had no luck. This is great, though.

Ordering the vac kit now...

I've been searching or this line now for about a week, can't see it anywhere.

There's an 8 inch line running towards the firewall in the general direction of the TT, but I can't see a hard plastic line running into the TT I might connect it too. I've checked all the other vac line, this is the one that's supposed to be connected to the A/T.

If this line got disconnected, could the line to the A/T have dropped out of sight in the TT?

That first diagram, showing "page 38" at the bottom, has the regulator and damper locations in the original (obsoleted) orientation. No big deal, but if you are really digging into the diagrams this would be a head scratcher for you without the below doc

How does the transmission shift? If there is no vacuum it drastically affects the shift quality so if it shift correctly the line is probably connected and you just have not found it yet. If the shifting is harsh you will need to find the line or run a second line to bypass the one you can not find.

Hi Roger -

I've been in Mexico for the past month and had to stop work on this, just now getting back to it.

The transmission used to shift fine but the car hasn't been driven in over 3 years. I'm fairly sure the line recently came unhooked while I was replacing the 7 way vacuum distributor last month. both of the fuel damper/regulator lines came unplugged at the same time.

I can't see the line running to the AT from the top of the engine. Putting it up on the rack I can't see it from the bottom either.

Does anyone know what parts need to be removed to get at the line from underneath the car? I'm thinking it may have dropped down under the bell housing out of sight, if I can see it I can probably push it back up into the engine compartment so I can re-attach it.

Thanks,
Scott.
