Default Wrong spare tire in my "86.5?

My 928 has a spare with a silver 16 inch stamped steel rim. I previously owned an 86.5 with a red alloy rim for the spare. The steel rim has 951 at the beginning of the part number. At that point immediately thought "944 turbo?" I'd prefer the "proper" spare and will buy one if the spare in the car is not a proper fit. I noticed on one of the vendor sites the spare for 86.5+ is red. Will the "wrong" rim function just fine, or should I replace it ASAP?

Thank you,
Jon

Jon - I don't know about the 951x rim, but you could try it and see if it fits--making sure it clears your rotors/calipers and it can be tightened. I used to have a silver rim spare in the 93--it fit the rear but NOT the front. Bought a red spare from a renlister.

Probably someone in the DC/VA/MD area with a red spare collecting dust in a garage. Or there's always Parts Heaven, 928 Intl, etc. Or just get AAA

NoVector,
Well, your situation was about as close to mine as it gets. I also thought I'd only be able to use it on the rear. Sometimes things "fit" and it's still not a good idea (thinking about offset). I'll start looking for a red one. Saw one on ebay but it is listed for 92 to 95 928s. Looks the same as the one I had before. I noticed 928 Intl only lists the red one as 86.5-91. Leads me to question the accuracy of the ebay description. Finding one local would be ideal. Thank you.

Hi Jon , the 951 ( 944 Turbo ) spare wheel 1985 - 1987/8 had a one piece alloy ( split rim) non painted "aluminium" in colour ,that was the only one that Porsche put the 951 part number on , however they only came in 15" dia & ET 30 , like the 928s & S4

Porsche was so impressed with this new very light weight space saver wheel that was made in Norway they dedicated three entire pages in the 1985 " Information Technik " in how this wheel was made out of one piece of alloy , cut / split and folded / pressed into place, this expensive wheel was fitted as standard on the 951 & the 928s 1986 & 1987 S4

Here is a summary of what Porsche fitted as spare space saver wheels in the 928 & 951 models in regards to our market in Australia , this will cross reference to most but not all other countries

928 & S 1978 - 1985
= steel rim ( very heavy)
Part Number on rim = 928 361 018 03 ( stamped on steel wheel )
Size = 15" X 55 ET X 5" wide

928S 1986 (Brembo Brakes), 1987/88 928S4 & 951 (944 Turbo 1985-1987/88)
= Trick one piece split rim, not cast ( very light) & non painted Alloy in colour
Part Number on Rim = 951 362 131 00
Size = 15" X 30 ET X 5 1/2 " wide

928S4 1988 or 89 ? - 1991 & 951 from about 1988 or 1989 ( like the S4)
= cast wheel & painted red ( a bit heavier than the 951 version)
Part Number on rim = 928 362 030 02
Size = 15" X 30 ET X 5 1/2 " wide

928GTS 1992 - 1995
= cast wheel painted red
Part Number = 965 362 030 00
Size = 16" X 5 1/2 "
