Default my 5 speed shifter design

Here is the 5 speed shifter that I made. I think this is a nice shifter. The shifter travels with the tube and eliminates the front tube and anchor point. I had to weld on a anchor plate to the tube to make it happen. Pictures are below. I am very happy with the way it shifts, nice and smooth no slop what so ever. The shifter pivots on sealed bearings so future slop will not be a problem I am on I think rev 3 of the shifter so there are some unused holes in the pics.

What is pretty cool is that the tube to the tranny is directly inline with the input shat of the tranny and never comes out of line, the tube just rotates and goes for and aft.

What do you think?

Also I posted a pic of my torque tube bearing carriers installed.

It looks very nice. Though having to remove the tube for an install is a pita.

I very much agree that having to have the tube out is a major drawback to this design. I have thought about a better shifter since I first shifted my 928. I think your shifter is very nice. I wanted to do a tube mounted shifter just from the perspective of having the shifter travel with the tube.

Very cool!!!!

I have a TT and a tranny awaiting a bearing upgrade & LSD install. I've been thinking about doing something very similar before the assembly goes back in. Nice to see a working model.

Very nice job! ... and a great improvement. I like the TT mount, even if it is more difficult to install, and the spot on geometry. The Porsche linkage design is amongst a few things that they didn't do well.

It looks extremely strong. You going to produce a kit?

Very nice! Could this all be clamped to the TT with some strong band clamps? This way it can be isntalled without removing the TT.

What kind of bearing setup do you have inside the TT, did you make that aswell?

I think a clamp idea could work if the bottom part had a flange sort of thing welded to it in the contour of the torque tube (as shown in red below), with some fat straps holding it down (as shown in blue below).

To avoid welding and be able to fit in situ the bottom part could be the shape of the torque tube ... add a dowel pin, which would mean only a location hole needs to be drilled (not fully through) into the torque tube from above ... then clamp it. For those who pulled the TT it could still be welded ... just ditch the clamps.

I think you had a thread recently on your TT bearing carriers? Did you stick with the O-rings to give friction fit?

I originally was going to do a clamp setup thinking that it would make installation easier but went with the weld on block to save some time and machine work. I also wanted to make sure it was a dead solid mount. I have some sketches of the clamp I was going to make.

Yes these are the bearing carriers that I posted about the other day. I installed them with RTV silicone to "glue" them in place I am very confident I will not have any movement.

I may make up a couple of shifters and see if there is any interest in them.

Very nice!

Having something like this would motivate me to track my car more often because as-is, I HATE the stock shifter and do not look forward to driving it at-speed due to how clunky and vague it feels on downshifts.

The stock shifter just sucks all the fun out of tracking the car at Road America, and yes, I do know how to drive.

Mine seemed to work just fine at BIR this spring and RA a few weeks ago! I should say until about the end of the second day at RA...front ball cup got very soft. Next project -- new Lizard shifter (already on its way).
