Default European oil selection poll

Unfortunately 10W50 or 15W50 oil weight is not sold for cars in Europe, just for motorcycles. Those have very high ZDDP and phosphorus levels. Besides I'm not sure I want to find out what motorcycle oil does to my car engine.

So, I've made a list of oils which are available. I drive my car from March through October. Which one would you choose if you lived here?

Mobil 1 0W40, synthetic, HTHS 3,7 cP, 1100 ZDDP, 1000 Phosphorus
Mobil 1 10W40, semi-synthetic, HTHS, ZDDP, Phosphorus unknown
Mobil 1 5W50, synthetic, HTHS 4,2 cP, 1100 ZDDP, 1000 Phosphorus
Castrol Edge 10W60, synthetic, HTHS >5,0 cP, 1080 ZDDP, 1000 Phosphorus
Castrol Edge Sport 10W60, synthetic, HTHS 5,3 cP, 1000 ZDDP, 900 Phosphorus

Hi Aryan

Umm both those grades ARE available in the UK ...for cars...

I used to use Mobil 1 10/40 but found it much too thin for my 928S2

I now use Fuchs 15/50 which I find perfect (even when using my Nitrous)....

Here is a link to the company I buy it from by the case... no affiliation but they are good guys.... http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-705-silk...e-engines.aspx

All the best Brett

Hi

Just to add, I didnt do the poll as I think the poll options are ALL too thin for a 928...0 or 5 or 10...too thin...

All the best Brett

Running M1 5-50 currently, so far so good. My engine has ~240k kilometers on it. Getting a bit of light lifter noise on cold startup, but other than that it's all good, pressures never went below 2 bar at hot idle.
Tried to run M1 10-60 through one oil change, but 5-50 feels much better.
To be honest, I'd probably try 0-40 to get rid of that cold start noise. The HTHS of 3.7 should still be enough even for spirited driving, according to Doug Hillary.

IMO there are 2 basic options:
1) Go with 5-50 and then try 0-40 only if you get (or don't like) the startup lifter noise.
2) Go with 0-40 and change to 5-50 only if you get too low pressures.

I wouldn't even consider castrol 10-60 for following reasons: First of all, from what I've heard that it's actually hydrocracked, not full synth; secondly it's IMHO just too thick for our engines; and lastly it's not recommended for our engines by Porsche themselves, unlike the 2 earlier specified Mobil counterparts.

A poll will not help you make your decission, refer to the Drivers Manual at the approved viscosity classes of engine oils suitable for your vehicle ensuring that you have a high ZDDP and Phosphorus level as these engines were developed in the 1970s and are classified as older engine technology and in many instance the newer oils are not suitable for use, as some or most of of the new engine oils have very low ZDDP and Phosphorus. Refer to ZDDP & P levels given in your post #1 as the requirement.

The viscosity classes are defined by the temperature operating range where you drive your car.

The viscosity classes for MY90 multigrade oils are contained on page 60 of the Drivers Manual.

-10 degrees C to 45 degrees C SAE 20W-40
-10 degrees C to 45 degrees C SAE 20W-50
-15 degrees C to 45 degrees C SAE 15W-40
-20 degrees C to 35 degrees C SAE 10W-40
-25 degrees C to 20 degrees C SAE 10W-30
-30 degrees C to 0 degrees C SAE 5W-30
-35 degrees C to -10 degrees C SAE 5W-20

It is interesting to note that no oils are suitable with a viscosity rating of 0W, why?????

It is also interesting to note in various posts that some owners are concern with low oil pressure at idle at operting temperature, why??????, could it be too low a viscosity rating at the temperature range that the car is operating in?

I currently operate with a SAE 15W-60 as temperature rance is 5 degrees C to 50 degrees C and the oil that I use has a Zinc, Mass % of 0.114 and a Phosphorus, Mass % of 0.104.

I hope that this helps.

They didn't exist 20 years ago.

I'm using Valvoline 20W50 and some who track their cars more use Valvoline 10W60. Both are easily available locally.

this is interesting, so what oil would be recommended for a really hot country like dubai where the minimum temp is about 5 degrees C and the maximum temp is 60C?
I run Castrol Edge Sport 10W 60 in my M5, I was considering putting that in the 928 but I wasn't too sure, any thoughts?

Edit: Never mind I found a brilliant thread on this oil:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ort-10w60.html

Seems like the best oil for me is 20W 50 because of the temperature.

Per the user manual you should aim for 10W 40 because of the colder temperatures, however some guys in Australia have opened up engines with +300K (yes 300 000) with no wear whatsoever while running 20W 50.
Read this: http://tinyurl.com/y9fg4jw Thanks JET951
Remember that a high ZDDP level is important ie 1200 ppm

Cheers

I've recently switched mine to Fuchs (formerly Silkolene) Pro S 10w50.. also on the advice of Guy from Opie Oils, whose dad has run an S4 for years. Thought I'd give it a go during the summer months, (trip to Le Mans, etc. etc.)

According to Mobil UK, the Mobil 1 5w50 is discontinued.

On my track car, I use Motul 300V 15w50.

That oil is largely used on race cars like LMP2 judd V8 etc....

Castrol edge 10W60 seems to be as good as motul. It seems that Yacco provide good stuff in 15w50 range.

For street use, I use MOTUL 4100 15w50. Very good oil for our old engines. Synthethic oil with mineral additive, not full synthetic as Motul 300V.

Best

I just use Castrol Edge for ///M engines in all my cars. Much cheaper to buy bulk. Now that I am taking delivery of an E61 M5 Touring on Friday, it should be even more of it around. Opie Oils will love me...

Thanks for all your responses. Interesting about the Fuchs oil, I never heard of it and it seems Fuchs is originally German. But, 10 or 15W is not available in Germany, except for motorcycles

I will have to check with Opie oils to see how much shipping costs.

I have seen Motul here in Germany as well, but it is crazy expensive, so I scratched it off the list.

I have been using 0w40 for three years now. I have seen low pressures on a rare occasion during the summer in a long traffic jam.

Just so I understand, is this the same as 1140 resp. 1040 PPM?
