Here's a nice original Daytona Spyder. Check out the seat as well as the current bid. Over 400 hp in the early 70's that propelled it to 173 mph. Was the fastest production car in the world back then.

The first racing version of the 365GTB/4 was prepared in 1969: an aluminium bodied car was built and entered in the Le Mans 24 hour race that year (the car crashed in practice). Ferrari did not produce an official competition car until late in 1970.
The official cars were built in three batches of five cars each, in 1970-1, 1972 and 1973. They all featured a lightweight body making use of aluminium and fibreglass panels, with plexiglas windows. The engine was unchanged from the road car in the first batch of competition cars, but tuned in the latter two batches (to in 1972 and then around in 1973).

Real bargains of early seventies Ferraris are 365GTC/4 and 365 GT4 2+2. GTC/4 gives 90% of Daytona performance at 1/3 price. If 928 were made in '71 it would have competed against GTC/4 more than Daytona even though GTC/4 has gearbox at front.

I've always admired the Ferrari's, but never had any interest in owning one. They strike me as a car that has a tinkered evolution as opposed to engineering. The 928 is almost the opposite.

Don't get me wrong I like my 928 but you'd need to seriously visually impaired to think the Daytona isn't a better looking car and sorry but the V12 Ferrari engine sounds much nicer too. As a practical everyday car the 928 beats most Ferrari's hands down but the one's Ferrari got right are truly something special.

hmmmm Daytona, surely has to be one of the most desirable and beautiful cars ever made. My prefernce is the 'Plexiglass' model.Th e lights are behind a cover, where the USA regulaters had to change that.....
Daytona Syder, just even better!
To me a 928 is a new interpretation of a Daytona, they were both to be the BEST GT cars of their day.
I remember getting petrol at Mansfield on the way to take photos of the Mt Buller Sprint [Vic Australia] and a Daytona was filling up. I backed in so we were tail to tail, my two favourite cars, ahh a dream one day!
This Daytona I shot at Phillip Island around 1977, my dads Leica, panned own the main straight flat out, what a noise!!
my other front engined transaxle delight, sadly sold....

I can't imagine pining away for a Ferrari, and even less imagine any large percentage of 928 owners having any kind of envy for one.
OTOH in SoCal Ferrari ownership isn't much of a badge of distinction, I think a lot of the dotcom stock options came with some kind of coupon for one.

I have only driven a few, Dino 246, 308GTB 'glassfibre', BB365, Maranello 550. They are all special cars and deserved of their accolades. A 550 is amazing, a 928 is different - so not a true comparrison, its not a long way away in driving, but the 550 has that something special.
You would need to compare a 928 to a 365GTC, the four seater Daytona, or a 612/456

WTF? If I had the disposable income I'd have a 275 GTB4 parked in front of my Daytona right next to my Miura SV. Sadly the 928 and the AMV8 would be left outside.
