add anothe vote for the SBC here. simple, easy power,TONS of options, no fun and games with TB's/ bent valves, or thrust brg issues... go beyond being brainwashed.

Rod bearings don't fail without a whole bunch of indication....especially with solid mounts.

It might be better to word that:

"Just another thing, there was no indication, to me, that the bearings were going.

A couple thoughts

Since you do have a SUPER rare LH euro I would NOT (as in HELL NO) to a SBC conversion...& I DO like the idea of a conversion...just not in a true LH euro, since they are SO rare.....if you had an older USA 928 then I would convert it...

I would rebuild with a 5.0L bottom end....it will give a bit more kick that you have been looking for and can easily make 290whp....quite respectable.....for not much more overall cost vs a 4.7L rebuild

I am concerned why your rod bearings failed....are you 100% sure that was the failure.....stock 928 rod bearings in street driven 928's last just about forever....I have opened engines that had 175K plus miles on stock rod bearings that looked GREAT.....the bummer is the "replacement" rod bearings are vastly inferior to the older Porsche bearings..several well built engines have failed recently due to the inferior rod bearings (plus tons of 944's)

Buzz, what you did to your car is very impressive, but it IS NOT a restoration...it is a modification. A RESTORATION (by very definition of the word) would mean that you RESTORED the car to its original condition.

Imagine how much it would cost to do a renegade change over if you actually had to PAY SOMEONE to do the work? That work plus the cost of the engine would EASILY cost more than a short block 5.0 EURO Hybrid set up...probably by several times. Don't get me wrong, I love the thought, but it is a daunting project when you get right down to it.

Hey Greg,

What would the typical "indications" be?
I've got some strange stuff going on with my car, so thought I'd put this out there.....

TIA.

Is it wrong to want a couple more HP without having to spend my kids college funds? I've already resigned myself that the resale value is plummeting so fast that whatever I do to the car is for me. That being said I have no issue with the conversion, that's why I suggest it. More importantly, are you happy with yours?
If you want an old Camaro you should buy one, not try to turn a 928 into one. The 928 does not have a suspension for drag racing, much more than stock HP tends to spin the wheels, and if for some reason the tires hooked up things in the drive line will break.

I suspect something or maybe many things were wrong with your Euro S, mine is not a tame car that leaves me wishing for a bit more hp.

'90 and '91 GT's that have been tracked, yea, I am buying that...hear that story all the time, but not in any of the other 928 motors...
James you just do not talk to enough track junkies.....remember Kim Crumb he was writing about it 20 years ago when it was called "944 disease" Mark Anderson's old car ,your car now, went through a few 16 valve engines

If you are not good at figuring out what engine noises sound like (and it takes years) cut the oil filter open and inspect it for debris...it will tell you (or someone) everything you need to know.

Much quicker than oil sample.

If it's money you want to save go with the 5.0 hybrid that everyone is talking about. I am doing the renegade conversion and had/having a blast doing it but it's not cheaper.
