Buying a 928? New, cheap alternative to Carfax
I haven't used Carfax in a while, but found AutoCheck helpful in the recent past. Now there is another alternative: instaVIN.
You can now get a carfax like report for $2.99 ($1.99 for the first one), even on your mobile phone! They even give you a value suggestion (which is probably inaccurate in the case of our cars).
But it can make the buying process more efficient: You look at a car, like it, do the check when you feel it's worth doing, and negotiate the deal right there.

What do the (actual, not sample) reports look like?
Would be nice to compare results with carfax and autocheck on a few cars.
I put in a ebay car, WP0JB0924DS860786 , but shows zero info without paying, not number of records or if any records were found etc.

Lack of the total number of records the report is based on even after you pay the initial amount totally sucks.
For anything in Calif the free smog history often is very informative.

"Management" doesn't like it, because it is theft, pure and simple. Thank you Lewis.......

You can access a variety of vendors providing title history information through http://www.vehiclehistory.gov/index.html.
There are still a few states not reporting information to the NMVTIS database and in my experience, the information from the vendors of NMVTIS title data is not as comprehensive as CARFAX and the like.

Checking history is a very good idea, but much of the time the data isn't that useful or accurate, so my twisted rule is, screen with the cheapest, once you are serious get a report from more than one source.
