Mine is disintegrated and I removed the remnants and the hatch still closes and opens with the key. Currently the electric latch release is in-op. Can someone tell me what the purpose of this insert is? Does it help with the electric latch release? Less squeaking when driving?

Thanks

In would think there are 2'parts you need.
1:The Teflon tape pads that goes opposite the rubber nubs about 1/2 way down the hatch.
2: The insert discussed here. I think in practice it keeps the plunger centered so it can unlock and raise the hatch. I think this peice also eliminated the side to side motion you may have thus reducing rattle.

Another product endorsement. I've had the hatch insert sitting in my closet for months and just living with an annoying hatch release that worked about 10% of the time. Finally got around to installing this last weekend.

Works great as advertised. Its nice to have a functional hatch release again. Thanks Roger for continued product research and keeping these cars up and running.
