Thanks to all for their help so far!
I havent considered torque tube bearing migration. From what I understand I can use a tape measure in the front of the TT to see if there is bearing movement. Does anyone know how many inches the bearing should be from the front of th TT?
No, the car has been running perfectly.
With Kurt's help (thanks Kurt for the perfect description of the noise!) I will measure the crank end play.

Could the engine go into limp mode every now and then - maybe unnoticed?

Hi Greg,
Could a harmonic balancer be the cause?
Troy
My bet is you have some kind of harmonic issue going on, it takes a lot of HP to just break one.

Dave,
Last night after I posted this thread I found a used flywheel complete with the flex plate off a 93 gts donor. I have never replaced the flywheel only the flex plate. Porsche only sells a combination flywheel / flex plate as a replacement...so I guess I will start there.

Listen to what others are telling you about the TT bearings, that would be the first place I would look.

Can you post a pic of the broken flex plates? I'd be interested in seeing how it failed. It may also give a clue as to what's causing it.

Do you think if I add another bearing to the front of the TT to have a total fo 4 in the shaft housing, could it help solve my problem without rebuilding the TT?

The last time I relpaced the flex plate I did notice a lot of up & down, side to side movement with the torque tube shaft.

I just got off the phone with Roger Tyson, and he feels like a lot of you, that the problem lies in the TT. Either the bearings have migrated to the rear of the car or the TT shaft may be warped or bent.

dont bother putting ain a new fleax plate till you repair the TT once your TT is apart you will want to check it for True roll the ds on a smooth surface and inspect the ends if one or the other is bent this can also damage the any flexplate you install as well as a migrated bearing, all of this will probably also transmit a damaging force to the thrust bearing in the engine and the torque converter bearings... SO your now going to have to fix the real problem instead of fitting a new part that will soon break
