Default Fuel pump question

Greetings -

I'm working on my '79 - cant seem to keep enough fuel to keep it running.

I've noticed that SOMETIMES, after it dies, I keep hearing the fuel pump running - which is good, because I'm trying to clean out the lines and it starts right back up if the fuel pump keeps running -

However, sometimes, after it dies, the pump stops running in about 5 seconds...

Any ideas on why sometimes it keeps running and sometimes not?

Thanks,
Russ & Russ

The fuel pump relay is designed to shut off if the engine dies...a safety feature. If you have a leaky injector and the pump runs you can fill a cylinder with liquid gasoline and then when you try to start another cylinder could fire and the one with liquid gasoline might try to compress a liquid. That can bend the connecting rod/ lift the head/ break a poston all rather bad things. Also if the car crashed engine stalled but car was on fire the pump stops to keep from pumping fuel onto the fire. CIS injection is totally dependant on proper fuel system and control pressures to function. And work requires the use of two pressure gauges to know what they are doing.

Default I GOT IT!

Whew... after about 4 hours of trying to remove the fuel distributor, I finally got it off - had to drill out 2 screws, but it's in my hand ready for rebuild.

what a pain in the *** that was! Not even completely sure that that's the problem, but after 31 years, it probably needs to be cleaned and rebuilt anyway -

Keep you posted...
