1987 Porsche 928S4 running rough
Recently, I called a car dealer located in Florida about a 928. The car is white and red with about 128k miles. The used car dealer said the 928 was running fine a few weeks ago, but has recently began to run very rough.
Thoughts? Yes of course it will need a PPO, but what do you guys think it will need. If i would purchase it i would do the following. Replace the plugs, wires and add some engine cleaner.
Does the S4 have coil pack for each plug? I have seen the coil packs go bad on several cylinders on a few of my other Non-Porsches.
Let me know what you guys think. The asking price is $5900. I would assume the brake pads are in need to be replaced and most likely the rotors. I hate purchasing a car long distance without first driving it. I did this once at a dealer in Florida. I purchased an RSA and it ended up having alot of problems.
Can the car be hooked up to the hammer to see whats going on? I don't know what years of the 928 can be hooked up to the hammer. I would assume later, maybe 89 plus.
PS i plan on doing all of the work myself.

THis sounds like the making of a really bad deal for you. Way to many variables here. You'll be much better served looking for a better car from a Rennlister, than to take a stab in the dark, with a questionable car.
That's a good price on an S4, but may be too good to be true. You need to have the car inspected. Where in FLorida?

The car is at Tarpon Springs, FL. "Exotic Motors Cars"
A rennlister car i had interest:
FLY NAVY car, but i assumed he either sold the car or decided not to sell her. He does not respond to emails or PM's. To bad, a really nice car and color combo.

'87 S4
That's a pretty good looking '87 S4...for $5900..!!
And I really dig that crazy RED interior..!!
Did you run a CarFax on that one yet? cannot tell if the dash is sun damaged
I know the Fly Navy car and it is really one to desire.
He was pretty serious about selling it awhile back in the fall.
Very well sorted out...he had it for sale a couple of times.
The Florida S4 intrigues me...
Could be bad gas....or one of several ignition or fuel related items as to why it is running badly..knock sensors..Hall sensor or ISV...all of these items will need to be replaced anyway, along with the Timing belt, water pump, rotors, pads,
the list gets pretty long on a 23 yr old S4..as long as you know this going in...motor mounts & oil pan gasket( major job), injectors cleaned and adjusted,
fuel filter,Trans filter and ATF, probably lots of defered maintenance.
But if you do it all, the likelihood is high the car will run well
Check out all of the posts in the 928 DIY section at the very bottom of the forum listings, also check out Dwayne's Garage on RL...he has performed and fully documented almost every DIY procedure for our cars...just to get an idea what is involved.
928 cars are not at all like your RSA or my 964 C2 track toy for maintenance.
Did I mention that I REALLY like the RED interior..?
Cheers and Good Luck with the search

It does look pretty good, from the pictures. THe interior looks good. THey do have nice large pictures to peruse. IF this is a running car. That price is good. But like Kev said you'll be replacing a bunch of stuff anyway. So plan on spending $$$ no matter what. Does the car have any records at all?

First thing to check on the rough running would be the coil wires, especially on the driver's side.
No way that you can tell whether this will be easy fixes and a good deal, or a money pit, without some hands-on work by someone knowledgeable on the 928.

I can't say, whether I can make it, work is busy for me right now.
yeah, that's why I looked at the car on the website. It's a bout a 6hr. drive 1 way for me down to Tampa/ Clearwater. Otherwise I definitely would check it out.

BTW, no, S4's do not have COP. They use two regular coils, one for each bank of four cylinders (there are two distributors as well). These coils are generally pretty reliable.
