Default Engine & Cylinder head assembly question

I'll keep it short,
86.5, just got it, Had a belt failure. 8 bent valves.
When reassembling, can I assemble it at TDC?
Or do I need to have it at 4/5 mark? If so, how can I mark the cams at the correct positions for 4/5? Is there a tooth count or something, or just assemble at TDC?

WSM says 45o BTDC on page 15-127. Git with Roger and order up a set of the manuals on CD if you have not already.

For an 86.5 you can use special tool 9226 to roughly set the cam timing, and then fine tune with Porken's 32V'r:

I have a set of the 9226 tools if you'd like to borrow them. Where are you in the country?

Also, have a look at the following Youtube videos:

I did mine at the 45 mark and set the cams as closely to the manual photo as possible. Then turned it over by hand and checked the timing aligment. If it's off by a a tooth or so, then re set it at the next correct 45 degree mark (crank needs to got around twice to get to the correct setting).
As for the cam timing you can use a simple dial indicator (HF sells it for $10), there is not real need for any special tools but if you have acess to one, use it.

just assemble at 45 degrees before TDC. that way, it doesnt matter what the cams look like. however, it saves time if you mark the cam pulleys at 45degree BTDC. that way you can just install the cams any old way and not worry about piston to valve contact. you can eye ball the cams and the keyway and see how it fits in to the cam pulleys relative to the timing marks . you are not installing the cams with the pulleys on anyway, so you dont need know how they are oriented.
thats the entire reason for the 45 degree installation advice.

since it sounds like there are no marks for the cam pulleys try doing the rear cuts about 4 or 5 teeth before the cam housing marks this will get you close then turn till TDC and check your work
