This is probably a dead-end too, but I came across this info in the 1999 service Info index on the Morehouse CD's. IDCS = Interactive Dealer Communication System. Maybe we should be dumpster diving at dealers for old computers?
Radio Security Codes are available to you by using the on -line IDCS . The first step in obtaining a radio security code is knowing where to find the radio serial number. Security codes cannot be obtained using the VIN of the vehicle .
Instead, the radio MUST be removed from the vehicle to obtain the radio serial number .
Radios that are code protected:
Alpine CD-2 Player - The serial number is located on the back side of the chassis and is preceded by the letter "B" .
Example : POCD - 2A0915598
Number to enter on IDCS = B00915598B
Alpine CR-1 Cassette Deck - The serial number is located on top of the radio chassis and is preceded by the letter "V" .
Example : POCR- 1M081090 7
Number to enter on IDCS = V10810907
Becker Radios - See Warranty Bulletin 9611, dated 9-26 -96 for information on obtaining serial number .
Note : Once you have the serial number, a code can be obtained by calling Technical Service at (770) 290-3647 or 3645 .
Blaupunkt Cassette Decks - The serial number is located on the right side of the radio chassis . (Reno II and Stuttgart Models }
Example : P07881 X 129029 0
Number to enter on IDCS = 1290290 (Last 7 digits)
Once you have obtained the radio serial number, the next step is to enter the serial number into your IDCS computer. Under Option 904, Warranty Information Menu, select Option 9, Radio Security Code Inquiry - then, enter the radio serial number . The computer will then display the radio number and model for verification and the security code . If you receive a message at the bottom of the screen No entry found for that serial number, it means we were unable to locate a security code for the serial number entered. Please recheck the serial number and retry . If unsuccessful after your second attempt, call Technical Service, they will then contact Alpine U .S ., Becker, or Blaupunkt directly to see if a security code is available .
Your attention to this procedure will assist your dealership in a quick and efficient manner of obtaining security codes and eliminate unnecessary phone requests to the Warranty Department .

I am having trouble translating from the # on the radio to the number to enter in the system.
My CD2 serial # is POCD-2A0313825A
What should be entered?
Also, I have learned from finally reading the owners manual for my '90 that the radio serial # is on a sticker revealed by removing the ash tray! Sure enough, it is there. Nothing stamped on my radio at all.

So that converts to B00313825B.
Sorry, there were some typos in the info I posted, I'll fix 'em.

This is a very interesting read. Sorry to revive an old thread. I was able to obtain a CR-1 radio and am having difficulty getting the code. Does anyone know of a dealership that still has the IDCS which can be used for code retrival? Do you think PCNA has this kind of info in their computers? Rob Edwards seems to have made a good contribution to solving this question.

Let me revive it again.
I have a CD-2 with a code. Was working fine but then the car was stored for some 10 yrs with no power for most of that time. Now it asks for code and I enter it and it flashes "code" a few times and goes dark without coming to life. If I press some buttons right after entering the code, it may even show FM freq for a few moments before going dark. Any troubleshooting manual or service for this radio?

1 more data point- I bought a code-less CD-2, contingent on being able to get it decoded. Took it to Creative Car Audio on Katella in Orange, who successfully decoded it for $50. No idea what/how they did it. Dropped off last week, picked it up today.
FWIW, they can also decode CR-1s, and also have bezels that fit the CR-1 and CD-2. Not cheap ($40ish) but there's not much point in installing a nice original radio if you don't have the bezel....

Revival once again..........with the display showing OFF do I have to disconnect power for 8/24 hrs before I can input the code again?
Tried the reset button but it still shows OFF!

The battery has now been in place for over a week; do I now need to press the reset?

I do not know about the reset button.
I had my radio out of the car. There are 2 power connections. The permanent power and the switched (ignition) power.
The last time I did this was 2013. On the power supply, I think I had the 12v connected to the Ignition power and the radio turned on.
In the car, that would mean key on. I wouldn't want to do that without a battery maintainer connected.
I removed the radio and had it connected to a power supply to reset it from OFF to CODE. I entered the code to verify that is worked and then put it into my car.
I had to re enter the code when it was hooked up in the car again.

The owners manual radio booklet states:
"the proper 5 digit security code (1 through 6).........if the correct security code is not entered in 3 consecutive tries the display will show OFF and will not accept entry until left ON for 24 hours"
