Lost first gear in manual transmission. Still have 2nd-5th and reverse. Any ideas?
When downshifting I missed third and tipped first, and I heard a thud. It sounded almost like something falling into place inside the tranny. When I try to select first now, it is like a lockout gate is engaged on first. No grinding or attempting to engage happens. The shifter starts down the channel to 1st, but is blocked really early. The car has apparently had a rebuilt tranmission, but I think they left some parts out. It has always shifted kinda sloppy. There isn't a lockout gate on reverse either because when I got the car I gave reverse a good whizz a time or two when shifting to second. Haha. I found this thread on Pelican Parts, and he appears to have done the same thing in a 914. They never solved the problem, but they thought it might be a broken brake band according to this guy's write up. I was either going to repair my transmission if possible, or buy me a nice rebuilt 85' and up transaxle.

Doesn't really describe my situation.
I read that, but I'm not stuck in first. I have been driving the car since it happened. I have just been using the torque of the motor to start off in second gear. I just can't get into first gear. Everthing else is like normal. Seems like the lockout gate is engaged and won't let me into first.

When my rear shift coupler started to let go, I started having trouble trying to get into 1st/reverse. Are you having any trouble getting into reverse too?

The Porsche design syncronizers if FORCED into gear simply expand and jamb on the ramp happens often to racers who "speedshift" trans needs to be taken apart worn bits replaced etc. etc. The later Borgwarner style syncros are more American friendly and endure drag racing a lot better The looseness was probably the shift linkage and not in the trans.

Vertex Auto has some ok prices on their trannies. I want to go with the '85 and up though. It should fit my '84 without any other modifications, correct? Will Vertex accept my '84 core for the '85 transmission?

Not a bad price for a Tranny, 85/86. It will be interesting to see about the core change and if they accept. It is a 1000 less than International price.

Sloppy throttle could be very well be shift linkage as you have atleast 6 potential hazard zones in the shift linkage along that can cause issues.
But it does sound like you have a tranny problem based on what you are describing. If that's the case, break out the bucks...

They don't have any '85 cores in stock and want to rebuild my '84. I think they just don't want to get an early core for the late trans. I'd be doing them a favor considering the early trans is more expensive. Probably hard to fine Porsche synchros.

Is there a code to decipher this post anywhere?
