Possible Holbert 928 restoration by Brumos! Update: No go!
Throwing caution to the wind on this one and not normally how I do things but thought to involve the whole Rennlist 928 community since there have been a lot of strong opinions on what to do with the Holbert car. Thought to make it a separate thread so it wouldn't get lost in the other ones.
This morning I called Brumos Porsche and they might be interested in doing a restoration on the Holbert car! They had this car for a short time and then let it go and now have another 928 IMSA safety car in their collection. I explained the situation and the person who runs their museum said he would bring this up with Hurley Haywood (!) to bring up to Mr. Davis the owner of Brumos.
The conversation could not have been more amicable and this person was also at the Daytona 24 hour race when the 928 racer fielded by Brumos was run. He is also a fan of the 928 and wishes he had never got rid of his 1988 928 5-speed he had at one time.
Thought to bring this out to hopefully stop any more damage to the Holbert car from getting done, like being cut up into pieces, until we get the decision from Brumos if they will take this on or not. My impression was it was definetly possible from the conversation!

Couldn't be a better outcome for the car, I hope they follow through and allow the car its right place in history.

That's awesome news! Whether it's them or the factory, or someone else - if someone is willing to restore it, that would be the best possible outcome. It really should not be taken apart until a possible restoration has been ruled out.

Matter of fact, I just happened to be at the Brumos museum two days ago on Tuesday night with PCA. I spoke to the head of their restoration dept & race team(Don), and the head of their service dept.(Frank) for quite a while. Said hello to Hurley, but he's not always too talkative. Shame I didn't know of your thoughts, I could of PR'd it to them more in person. I wouldn't say I was close friends or anything, but they know me by name at least. We did speak alot about 928s & even looked at a 928 engine from an '85 32v they had on a stand in the restoration shop. The head of service even gave me some pointers on a recent problem I encountered.
The two 928s in the museum are a white '78, and a red S4 that was an IMSA medical rescue car that the race doctors drove. The group I was in touring the museum was led by the head of their PR. They don't allow cameras, otherwise you know I'd have lots to post. I can say that you cannot imagine how incredible their museum is, more memorabilia, cars, etc. than you can imagine, not just Porsches either.
Don said they are way behind on what restoration work they do have. As I said, he is also the head of one of their two race teams too. There was a 356A in there that I saw last year when touring the museum & I commented to him about them still having it there. Then we looked at their work schedule board on the wall & for this car under the "Due Date", he'd written "Yesterday".
He mentioned his travel schedule the past 60 days & the next 45 & it is very hectic. Besides the Grand Am racing all over the country with constant travel, he was just out at Monterey for the Historic races where they honored Mr. Bob Snodgrass, the face of Brumos until he past away two years ago. They were also at the filming of the Panomera commercial that we've all read about here on RL. Brumos had several of their famous race cars in the commercial, and Don said he was driving one of them during the filming, but I can't remember just which one.
Don is a nice super guy. If he can help you out he will. He has an engineering degree & both he & the head of service have been with Brumos for over 25 years. He gave a private 15 minute tour & "lecture" to myself, my son & another couple of their restoration dept & engine rebuild room. I told him I enjoyed that more than the museum!
Anything I can do, (although maybe nothing), just let me know & I'll be more than happy to help out.

On the other hand, I would also say that, like most high end car dealers, they would certainly love to increase their business of any kind right now I'm sure. Besides, Porsche, they have two Mercedes & two Lexus dealership & I know without Lexus right now, they'd be hurting. So now might be the perfect time to get their attention to take on such a task.

I think mark still has the original engine. It would allow him to put the big motor in the other car.
For those that want to help Mark get into another raceable car, the project scope just got bigger. If the Holbert car goes intact to Brumos for restoration for their collection, the new race car project will be pretty much a build rather than a part transfer, except for the engine of course.
