strong smell of gas from gas cap and filler door
just got car running okay (lots of time due to the fine economic times)
filled tank to 3/4 and my wife complained about really strong gas smell in garage . unfortunally she was right !
no leaks anywhere . noticed gasket between filler door and tank pretty torn up
but i have gotten gas before no problems .
i also have never filled the tank that high . but i have no leaks of any kind that i can see . under the car, on the tank , or any of the lines .
it is defiantly coming from fuel filler door area as soon as you open it the smell is clearly there and strong!
any suggestions
it's a 85 euro

Maybe one of the vent hoses?
On mine I had a leak at the gasket where the sender goes in the top of the tank. Raise the carpet in the rear and a pad and plastic cap covers the access hole.

Not sure if your car has the Y-Connector but that is one place I would start. I had a similar issue a couple of months ago and after replacing my broken Y-Connector (Front Passenger Fender) the fuel smells which blanketed the garage were gone. Other suggestions include pulling your rear hatch carpet to make sure a previous owner didn't drill holes into the fuel tank when installing an aftermarket stereo.
I'm sure others will also chime in.

I would pull the rubber gasket you mentioned. There is just a ring that snaps out very easily. Once you have it out, you can the check the hose for the overflow tank very easily. Should take all of about 2 minutes (including getting the beer).

thank you everyone for the thoughts . the easiest way to fix the problem was to drive it until it reached half way on fuel gauge.at least it was the most fun repair .
the rubber grommet can be removed without dropping fuel tank ?
the fuel smell comes directly from the fuel door area. you can stand 5 feet and smell it. only at 3/4 tank full.

also no smell from under carpet in hatch area . i changed fuel sending unit months ago and no extra holes either ...
at least the car is bone stock accept for some unique wiring . no extra holes no cross threaded bolts .
it makes thing so much easier.

The filler neck grommet doesn't seal anything. Its external to the tank designed to catch fuel spills and route them to a drain line.
Easy to replace as I remember it though.
