Default a/c recharge - R-12 needed in San Diego

Anyone know who can recharge the R-12 in my 81 -928 - in San Diego area, most a/c shops won't touch it!
Upgrading to R-134 is not an option :-)

Just go across the border into TJ, and you can buy the R-12 for 20% of what you will pay here Any auto part store will have it. I bought mine in Rosarito because we visit there ofter Also, the more reputable A/C shops will charge your system.

I know that is an option, just trying to find someone further north, like Escondido :-)
- plus my wife would have a fit if i went across into TJ, particularly as I'm a British citizen and will probably get a hassle at the border!

Now you are talking - if someone goes and does it - then we can have an a/c recharge party !

I am in Santa Monica, but can bring a manifold, air vacuum tool (HFT), and two extra gauges to that party.

Neil,

I've got gauges and a vacuum pump for R-12. If you supply the R-12 we can install it, assuming your system passes the vacuum test. Roger has R-12 btw...

Bill, great to hear from you -system has been down for a while, the a/c pump came of one of Brendan C's donors and was fully charged when we pulled it - so i'm hopeful that it will work - i'm waiting on the final O rings now and it will be back on - do you have the proceedure for the low side oil fill as well ?
i'll IM you when its ready to go, and i'll contact Roger.
thanks again.
Neil

You can still buy R-12 on the internet, just takes a little searching.

For example:

im curious why you say converting to R134a is NOT an option

I believe you need to drain the compressor, replace the dryer and the expansion valve but then its fairly simple.

Why is a conversion to R134a not acceptable to you? Im asking because i will likely convert to R-134a on this 85 for the simple fact that the fittings to fill it in my experience are much easier then the R12 stuff.ut i still worry that R134a wont cool as effectively as the R12

I was in a walmart and recall they had bottles of R134 for like $7 a can. Thats pretty cheap, although you only need 3.

Damn, I had no idea that it was that expensive here in El Norte. I am going down to Rosarito next week to help a friend take care of some issues with Telefonica-TeleMex. The last time I bought some, it was $9.00 a can and I bought 20 cans. If my wife doesn't go, I'd be happy to bring some back.

Check the OC or LA (or SD, I'll bet) craigslists. You can get R12 all day long for $10 a pound. There's plenty of it around and very little going into cars. I've still got ~18 or so lbs left.

I recently found a closeout at the local Target where they were selling 12oz cans of r134a for 2.98 a can - I bought all 7 or 8 cans they had.

Check the price on this can of R-12 I popped about 10 days ago.

Ahhh... the good ol' days.
