It will get him on the road if I can get it repaired using the excellent tips shared so far.

So far (knock on plastic...) mine has done really well with just the regular (annual) coolant changes. Use the right coolant, distilled water, change regularly, and there really isn't much that should go bad with the core itself. Right? Passed 90k this week. The 'new car' aura is diminishing just slightly.
Dr. Bob:

I've got a pretty good stack of used radiators sitting around. If you need one or two...to play with....come by and get it/them. Mark Anderson used to take them and rebuild them, but doubt he wants them, now that he sells his aluminum ones.

The two circuits 5 speed cooler is here in Germany ~ 500 €.In my 2 928 the radiators get broken after 20 years of use.
You can use this unit in AT cars with an extra oilradiator.

Cool info on Carl's setup.

I didn't have any problems with fitment on the C&R because I also went with sharkblades at the same time. I found I can do a timing belt job without even pulling the rad!

I put a C&R radiator in my 84 and never a problem since. For the $800.00 I had to spend, no more tow jobs was worth it.

Thanks Greg--

I'll be down in the neighborhood late next week hopefully to get some painted parts from Big Chris. I'll stop by for a visit.

dr bob, sounds like you have a better option locally. I may hang this thing on the wall as decoration. Meanwhile decision made, I'm calling Carl and ordering his radiator and electric fan kit tomorrow. I went round and round on it, finally decided that the increased cooling and reliability was completely worth it given where I live and the desire to drive the car as much as possible. Replacing the tanks would run me a couple hundred and to me, it's worth it to go one better. Besides I don't need either cooler so the costs aren't as bad as they could be. Lots of shiny bits going on the car now!

You are making a smart choice. Do it once, do it right, do it like you mean it!

Can any of the above posters provide a link for the C&R Radiator?

Thanks

Yup, that's exactly how it shoud be done. If its'a pinhole leak, without pressure, you can go a loooooong way before the coolant leaks out. 70 miles would have been easily doable.

Do the new rads come with the factory warning sticers? That rad looks old.

You could also repair the side tanks by just cutting off the Tabs and making up some stiff "c" clips. Bending the edge of the core where the end-tank seals can cause even more issues with the core and or the seal channel.

When compressing the end tank on the core I would not use clamps that put pressure on the other end-tank and its seal, as this could also damage the other tank.

Mat and I repaired my end-tank and it has lasted 2.5 summers (Two trips to SITM) and going on three winters (note: I do not drive the car in the winter).

Whatever you decide to do it is great to have options
