How long will the coolant system hold pressure? Have you done an over-night pressure test?

I think it is time to address my welded DS cylinder head witch I presume is responsible for my coolant leak.
The plan is to replace that head and change both head gaskets. How much should I look for?
Used Head cylinder : $ ???
Machine shop time : $ ???
Any special think to look for when buying a used cylinder head?

oups,
Where was it welded, and have you dont the tests I documented above. If you do them it will tell you if you need to do this. If you do not then you are simply throwing money down the drain for no reason!

Consider replacing the heater valve regardless. Also tighten all the hose clamps for the front hoses (careful on the rad side). Once this is done remove as much of the milkshake from the seperator as is possible, then take the car out for a drive. Drive the car for between 2-3 hours. Rush hour is good as it gets the oil in the engine REALLY hot. As well as some hard thrashing on the back roads if you can. ....

I will take the car for a ride today.

I hope by a drive you mean a good long one, enough to get the oil upto full temperature for a minimum of 45 min to burn/evap contaminites out of it.

Yes, I will use it during rush hour this afternoon. It will have the time to go up Full Temp.
I went for a ride (45-50 Km) yesterday evening and when I checked the coolant level this morning, there was still pressure on the cap. So the system is holding pressure or least some of it.
I will continue with a pressure tester.

How much coolant was missing?
When you fill it squeeze, then release and repeat multiple times the upper and lower rad hoses. This will help to get any air bubbles out of the system.

I have a lot of work at the office so a little less time for the shark but I found some yesterday.
I took a look at the oil dipstick. It looked like a Marble cake (black residue in the oil) but no white - milkshake like deposit. So I decided to take a better look and I did an oil change... The oil was more like a sludge - very thick and had a coolant smell to it.
The good news - now I know where the coolant is going
So tonight, I will do a rislone flush to clean the engine and put some fresh oil.
Engine pull is next ...

Why bother to put fresh oil in it for a pull?
And a little bit of black floating around could be normal for an engine. Could you post up a pic of what you really saw? As black sludge doesnt normally come from coolant. And if it was from gasket material you would have a milkshake.
When you say it smelt like coolant, how bad does it smell??? and you put the dye in the coolant, can you see any of that in the oil (longshot I know)?

I had both my heads decked, seats cut, valves cleaned up and reassenbled with new stem seals for $250.
I have not driven the car enough yet to say if it was a good deal or not.
Seems that there is an increase in head gasket related issues for 928s in general over the past year. Are we getting to some sort of time/storage-milestone rather than miles?

Fraggle,
That is a SMOKING deal for 2 heads!!!! For just guides and a valvegrind I cant get under a grand a head here!
And yes, we are getting to a time thing. And with the fact that most owners dont change the coolant every 2 years this accelerates the problem.
