Default Removing rust on rotors hats to prep for paint

Hey guys,

The rotors from my S4 have developed rust on the rotors hats and around the out edge on the vane ends (they've been sitting off the car while I attend to other maint issues).

I want to remove the rust and then paint the hats and possibly the outer edge/vane ends.

Question: does anyone have any suggestions for removing the rust on the rotor hats?

I don't want to wire brush them. Some type of chemical method is preferred.

Question: Is it worth removing the rust and painting the outer edge of the rotors where the vane ends are?

Question: Are the rotor edge visisble when the wheels are on the car? If they are not visible, seems pointless to paint the rotor edge.

Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ed

Why don't you want to use wire brush?
I didn't think it would be as effective as some time of chemical stripper, but hey, I have a brush wheel and cordless drill, and two minutes per hat, sounds like I can't go wrong, ha ha!

Ok, thanks, I'll give it a shot.

Get a can of the Rustoleum stuff and it sticks to it just fine.

clean off the mating surfaces as well on the hubs and the inner hats, you can use some anti seize here so they wont rust and they will be flat

Use Hammerite paint - works really well

Plus 1 as Roger said.

Find it at Home Depot. You can paint it on and it looks like you sprayed it. It's Rustoleum Hammered finish paint and it has a mild "texture" or hammered look to it. Jim, Roger, and I have done it. My 79 has gone 4 years with it. I brushed it on right over the rust as it says in the instructions. I also did the vents on the outside of the rotors. Use a small brush to put it on, put one more coat on per the instructions. The first time you put the brakes on, it will "wipe" a nice clean line in the hat.

Here is a some info on it http://www.epaintstore.com/xcart4/pr...6&cat=0&page=6

Buy it at Lowes or H Depot.

Easy and effective. I think Rog and Jim did theirs about a year before I did mine and theirs looks great as well.

Good luck!

Oh yeah,

IT comes in Silver, Black, and a funky bronze color. I did the 79 in black to give it a "2 piece rotor" look.
Jim and Roger did theirs in silver I believe.

Both look good!

Or, if you are running stock S4 wheels, just leave them rusty, nobody can see them anyway.

I'm a smartass.

Paint them!!

Ok, more good advice. I especially like the idea of being able to paint the outer edge, the vane edges, even if no one will be able to see them. I hate rust.

Thanks guys! -Ed

Been there done that....

as mentioned before you MUST remove all rust prior to paint...otherwise the paint will fall off with the rust....

two years later and my rears still look great....the fronts are not as good, showing some rust, but I think this is due to the heat generated on the track....

clean off the rotor surface with acetone, so the pads are not cleaning off the braking surface , this could contaminate the pads and cause them to glaze as the paint will be baking into your pads

Submerge in Muratic Acid. About 12 to 24 hrs. Completely strips to bare metal. Hose off and blow dry. Paint hat and back side and down into vents with heat paint. ( Not for kids. Its hot and it burns. )
