New (used) Shoes for the Daily Driver w/pics
Some of you may remember a set of used 18" twists with tires up for sale by Jim at 928 Intl a while back. Even though I wasn't in the market for new wheels or tires (since I just bought a new set of 16" factory spec tires last summer and driven very little on them), I was in the area at 928 Intl so thought I'd have a look.
Aside from a little curb rash, the wheels looked great and the tires were in great shape with lots of tread left. Sizes are Front: 8J18-ET52 wearing 225/40ZR18 and Rear: 10J18-ET40 wearing 265/35ZR18. Jim made me an offer I couldn't refuse.....So they came home with me. THANKS Jim!
First I did a little clean up. Here's the before picture....
I used Orange Blast citrus cleaner to get the dirt and grease off. They did have some stubborn coating on the insides that looked like cosmoline. Used a razor blade (carefully) to scrape it off. The razor blade was really only good on the flat spots.
Here's all four lined up after cleaning and ready for install...That's the wife's pampered shark in the background - the one with the flowery blankey it sleeps with.
My original wheels were the chromed discs. Unfortunately, I won't be able to check for gum under my shoes in the wheel reflection anymore
This was also the first opportunity for me to use the new liftbars from PorKen. THANKS, PorKen - I love the liftbars! These really made lifting the car a snap. Although I figured out the green tape is the center of balance for the bar for placing the jack under I don't know what the orange tape is for?? Anyone??
Here's what the car looked like with the orginal wheels on it....
And here's after the change......Jim warned me that it would change the look of the car and I agree - I like it much better!
While I was cleaning, I noticed that the center caps (these are plastic) were yellowed in the center. I ran across some "Yellowing Remover" available at Kragen and thought I'd give it a try.
Here's a before and after what the center caps looked like and after they were cleaned with the cleaner. It takes a little elbow grease but it took the yellow right out. A nice product.
After taking the car for a spin around the neighborhood, I noticed some slight rubbing at the rear wheel (rubbing on the inside rear quarter). I considered some options for aleviating the tight fight and even talked with Jim about it as well. In the end, I decided to take another look at the rear quarter shape at the top of the wheel. They looked a little flat (almost pushed in). So, I used both hands, curled my fingers under the rim and gave it a little tug (on both sides). Checked to make sure it looked good - looked great - even better than before, I thought. Took it for another drive and no more scrapes.
All in all, I couldn't be happier with the new (used) wheels and tires. The fact they have a few minor imperfections is PERFECT for my daily driver. They compliment my 6.3 out of 10 body and paint with its dings and chips and scratches. I couldn't ask for a better set - I LOVE it! Been liking the comments too - on the way to work this morning, the guard at the gate says "I like your car" in a way that reminded me of the same line from the Terminator 3 movie.
THANKS for reading!

Excellent job as usual!! I say we all pool our money and get Dwayne his own T.V. show..... or maybe not. He would be so good at showing what 928's are about that our "affordable" undiscovered Porsches would go way up in price. Let's just keep this thing between us here.

THANKS for the great comments, All!
Ahhh yes, I see that now. OK, that helps....THANKS, Rich!
Jim,
Why yes, I'm going! I'll be leaving Ridgecrest tomorrow morning - want to make it there by 5:00pm for the reception. I'll be driving the '84 pictured above. You going??
HeeHee. I can honestly say I haven't considered TV, BUT I have thought about making video of some repair jobs - found my old tripod last week. Now just have to figure out how to attach video camera to my head while working under the car!! Someday..... Thanks for the compliment!

I think Dwayne is slowley sneaking up on Keith Widom as far as good quality technical write-ups and projects are concerned.
Keith, you have some competition -- time to get that convertable, daily driver project off the launch pad!

Dwayne, the wheels look great! I love those twists. Especially like your cleaning regiment. Just like new! I'd like to see a set of those on mine at some point, but for now, Ryan, I think the chromies look pretty darn good!

Congrats!!
I do the same thing every year with my wheels, pull them off the car and clean them thoroughly, but prior to putting them back on I put a couple of coats of wax on them, which helps keep them clean and makes the yearly chore a bit easier.
