How much does it cost to build a 928 Track Car??? (Update June 2010)
So...in the spirit of open source..and full disclosure, I figured I would start a thread on what it is costing to build my 928 Track Car. Now I'm not planning on going full bore (like Mark A)..but using this car to hit Driver Ed events, some SCCA events, maybe an open road race or two..basically to have a 928 that I can thrash at the track without fear of beating up my 89GT..so..here goes...
First and foremost..finding the appropriate starting car....I got lucky (in my mind anyway)...and found a 82 5speed 928 that has GTS flares and an S4 motor installed and was running when I got it...
Cost..$4200
(I'm ignoring transportation to my home and other costs like registration because they will vary greatly)..
new Power Steering pump line $100
Recaro SRD's $800
C&R all aluminum Radiator $500
full S4 suspension/brakes $1500
Full roll cage $1800
38mm bolt on spacer $110
The rest of it was sweat equity..ripping out the interior etc..cleanup of sound deadener panels..fixing leaking PS pump...
that all totals up to :
$9010
that said...my goal was to be around 10K...and I know I'll go over that by some since I bought some stuff I didn't need..but wanted...like the rad....and i know I will eventually get GT cams..and a LSD...but I think for a budget racer..this target/cost is about one should expect to build a 928 tracker..
I do remember that 84 Euro the guy drove out to Sharktoberfest from NJ..had no sunroof...5sp LSD tranny..and S4 engine..all for around 5K...that would be a good starter candidate..
As far as buying a prepped racer to start with..there were a few here...most notably Dean K's car..that Ken Osage bought..for around 15K I think...ready to roll...great deal...and then Constantine sold his Coca Cola 85 track car (minus an engine) for around 12K..Abby is in the process of re-constructing that one...
I'll keep updating this thread as my costs increase...if anyone else has some price point data they are willing to share...feel free to contribute....
Thanks,
OK..update some more...

Sheet of lexan to make side windows and rear quarter windows and rear hatch window.. $134.00

total now..as of Sept 08
$11,664
so..now need to sell the CS rims with 245 hoosiers and the Recaro SRDs..now with sliders...
Cost to be updated once those sell...

Tom ,Tom ,Tom you should know this ......never never ever add up what it costs to be on the track. And the closer to a track day the less important $$$$ becomes I have spent far more in tire bills than I did for the car !

LOL..speaking of tires....I already have a good set of Hoosiers mounted on my spare Club Sport rims...we'll see how far those go.... and yes...I know about the costs.....but ..now being divorced..I only have to justify my expeditures to myself....and I'm pretty easy going on myself lately .

Craigs list there was a 95 model 996 L production car for sale for $40,000 they stated that they have receipts for $100,000 for the last 12 months. This is a slightly modified car , cage and slicks headers nothing serious....

the budget racer conversion to make a car as fast as the holbert car, or near as fast, would be :
$ 8k for base car
$8k for go fast stuff.
$2-4k to make stuff look a little nicer and slightly faster. (ie paint, lightweight stuff, etc)
so, my answer, and ive done this a few times: $16 to $20k.
Now, you can take any $8k S4 and put a set of wheels and tires on it and gut it with a cage and have a track car that is pretty fast. But, thats still:
$2k wheels
$800 used tires/ new rotors and racing pads in front
$2k cage
$1k basic safety equip (seat, harness, net, )
$1k suspension and swaybars
(there is your $7K) add a few more $K for the nicer suspension, the headers and exhaust, etc

Thats why the 928 is so cool. it is as fast as a street GT3 and only costs under $20k to keep up. (and last 6 full racing seasons!)
pretty hard to beat the 928 value.
Doesnt hurt to have the 928intl and Specialists around to help as well.

Gas $200 (maybe more)
Destroyed front street tires due to collapsing something yet to be found in the front end $300
$1437 for about 45-60 minutes of track time (should have been 3hours 40 minutes of track time) not including the 15+ hours (only 500 miles round trip) of driving there (in traffic) and back (hydroplaning in torrential rain). Also not including having to replace the heat cycled out Hoosiers, pads, oil change, loud and loose CV joints and LSD, dead shocks, damaged wheel, and damaged fender...

And I used to complain when I spent $20k/yr on a SCCA habit in the mid 1980's... With a tire sponsor, and an engine sponsor.
It costs a lot to just get to the events, especially if you carry a crew of one or two volunteers. Hotels, meals, etc. Gas for a tow vehicle. Insurance. It adds up. Not something I would try married though...
SCCA Amateur sports car racing used to be a bargain!
