Tony,
NEVER ask permission...only forgiveness! LOL!
I can't wait to see pics of this car. I missed this thread the first round (I was not here yet).
Like Don H, I have spent WAY MORE than $40k to bring Anderson's first racer back to life. That said, I love the car! You can ask Mark, if you don't completely take a car apart you will NEVER get a cage in it as good as what he put in that car!
Custom fiberglass doors, and front fenders. Modded rear fenders. Lexan everything (glass windshield though still). 12" wide 16" diameter wheels (not great...would have to go bigger for GTS and up brakes), custom aluminum dash full of autometer gauges, electric panel... Really great starting point for a SERIOUS race car.
As noted how fast you want to go will dictate how much you will spend.
I have a simple stock CIS engine in place (not sure if it is a 4.7 Euro S or a 4.5L US, but guessing that it is US just based on how little pick up it has), and a stock S4 trans. For me since I could not do any of the work, I had to pay others BIG MONEY to do it for me and since I could not climb in through the window like Mark did we had to do a MAJOR rework of the drivers side roll cage and turn it in to a functional door.
Anyway, I am not unhappy about how it turned out, but it certainly missed the mark...I was trying to build a fun, relatively cheap DE/race car and ended up spending more money than I have on ANY of my other cars! Now I REALLY don't want to hurt the thing!
You can read all about it here: http://www.928racing.net/JamesMorrisonRacecar.htm
Be cool and be safe everyone and lets keep those 928's on the road and the track!

You might have a point...
but the E36 M3 is an easier / cheaper platform to turn into a racer overall...
Note, I am not saying better, just easier due to sheer numbers out on the road, number of tuners involved, parts prices etc...
How is your dry sump coming along?

if you drive a bmw round the ring no one will know who you are unless they look at your number plate - unless it is an absolutely insane car like fabians M1 engined monster. if you drive the 928 its hard to miss visualy and with the headers im guessing it will be a favourite amongst the spectators
