Whats it worth? 79 928
Im getting ready to offer my father some money for his 1979 928.
The car is in almost perfect mechanical condition with 350,000 miles, he has owned it since new. The brown paint is faded, but the body is extremely clean. The 5 speed shifts great, but on upshifts it grinds a bit, worn out synchros and has been doing this for some time. The seats in the front are newly sewed. The dash has a few cracks and the interior is stripped in the rear. He has all the pieces though. I would usually be able to figure out the worth of this car, but Ive been around it all my life and its history is unusual. So what do you guys think?
Oh yeah, he's replacing his old friend with a new lotus elise, soon to be supercharged!

Id love to only pay that much for the car, but you have to cut it some slack. It is extremely well maintained. Its not a typical 928, I would wager better mechanical condition than just about any 928 here. Not considering engine dressing and shiny parts. I was thinking $4500 personally.

For a fairer assessment, providing the following would be helpful in getting input from people on the list:
- a list of maintenance items that have been done in the last few years (suspension, radiator, intake, head gaskets, fuel lines, coolant system, timing belt?)
- a list of anything not working (electrics, a/c, etc.)
- photos of the interior condition (carpets, front seats, hatch)
- photos of the exterior in daylight from a couple of angles
Bear in mind that much as you've grown up with the car and love it, the lack of rear seats, need for a gearbox rebuild, and mileage will all work against the value.

I'd go somewhat north of $2k simply because most comparables carry a certain amount of risk of the unknown. You are usually buying from some schmuck or dealer who may or may not be telling you everything he knows about it. Hopefully your dad raises your confidence a bit.

I disagree! If all the records are there and it is a one owner maintained.
$3500 depending on the interior, TB/WP, Tranny, A-arms and steering stuff, if all of these and others are current it could be more because of mechanical soundness.

Anyway, as a die-hard OB lover, I applaud your desier to keep this car on the road and better yet, in the family.
$2k on the low end yes, I agree with Andre $3,500 wouldn't be out of the question.

He could never get $2,000 from a stranger with the paint issues interior challenges and the very high miles. The partial S spoiler install adds nothing. Have him put it on Ebay that would be a reality check ! But in the end if you and he both agree on a price what is the difference ?

wow this is not at all what I expected. Everything on the car is up to date. The tranny synchros have been bad for 50,000 miles. They show no signs of ever going out. The car runs flawlessly, mobil 1 ever since break in. Super blue racing brake fluid, the car has koni shocks all around, it has new pads and rotors as well. He replaced the CV boots a couple monthes ago. The car is in superb mechanical condition. Everyone is turning their nose up at it just because its faded paint, and striped interior. The interior is in great condition its stacked in our basement.
Ive driven other 928s and occasionally Im lucky enough to drive his car sometimes, it hauls *****!!
I personally believe that the longer 928s run the better they run, because of their silicon injected blocks which allow oil to pocket next to the cylinders on their strokes.
Does any of this change your above opinions? Or is it just me because Im attached to the car so much?

I think you've already came to the conclusion that it's worth more than were saying and in sentimental value it probably is. The problem is on a retail value it's just not worth much. It's not even a Euro. Like we've said post more pics if you want a better evaluation. Other than that just pay what he's asking for it.

Say $4k to $5k less the cost of fixing the synchros
