Cam Shafts
Can you put a 928 GT cam in a 928 S4 head?
If so, what years? All years?
I want to get an 88-89 S4, but I am curious if I can add the GT cams.

Tabor,
You mentioned perhaps purchasing an 88/89 S4 and then replacing the cams with GT cams. It can be done, as has been mentioned, not cheaply. I would want to add one more item for consideration. The 88 S4 came in an auto and 5 speed. I believe the 89/90 S4 were automatics while the designation GT became a 5 speed only. Other changes than the cams also differentiated the cars. So, an interesting question would be, because of different gear ratio, perhaps ignition and fuel demands monitored by the computer, would you not get all the performance you hoped for if the car is an 87-89 S4 (automatic)? Just a thought. The best to you in your search and updating the car!

I was planning on a 5 speed 928 S4. They were manufactured in 1988 and the first half of 1989 before the GT hit the market (kind of like the 89 Carrera 3.2, before the 964 C2 got out).
The thing is that, I don't want to spend the $5000 premium for the GT. It puts it just out of my price range.
I tell you the truth, this would be my long distance cruiser. I probably wouldn't ever swap the cams. I just wanted to know that if I ever wanted to, I could.

Tabor,
You are absolutely correct in taking an S4/5 and over a period of time updating the car to something similar to the GT. The cost is something to consider. If you really want a GT, though, I am not sure you can save any money by changing an S4 to the GT. There is an exception, though, if you can get an S4 really cheaply and you must do some engine, transmission, suspension work and up-grading of wheels anyway. In other words a real project will make it worth your while, be enjoyable and you can even up-date past the GT!
I took a benignly neglected '88 S4/5 and over the past 5 years have changed all items, except the cams, to GT specs. By the way, do not overlook the exhaust--it's lighter and more "open." Porsche will even sell a GT brain for the GT cams, etc.
As you can see, I am pleased and perhaps in the end did not save any money, have not increased the value of the car past what an excellent S4 is worth--but it's mine and I know it very well. It's a real joy to own and drive.
Let me also express my "thanks" to the three major suppliers of parts and advice and all of the participants of this discussion board and the various web page enthusiasts who gave valuable information. Many of them wrote about costly errors which in turn saved me grief and money! Thanks to one and all!
Good hunting and best of luckto you!
