Question My S4 is always blowing hot air through the vents

For the past 3 months since we've had the 928, it's been blowing hot air from the vents and the temperature is set at the coolest setting (65). I know on 944s that when they blow hot air a small plastic pivot bracket that connects the valve to the temperature controller on the dash breaks and can be replaced when crawling under the dash. Is there something like that on this car? How do i get cooler air again??? BTW my air conditioning needs recharging.

Thumbs up

Euro,
Check the Nichols site under climate control , temporary fix.
Jay Wellwood from Arkansas and Dave from Pittsburgh dived under my hood after I bitched about a 700 mile run in the blazing sun with blowtorch like heat being emmited from the vents -all of them.
On my Weissach -82' MY - We pulled the air box cover, filter, airbox base, examine base for pull-off hoses and location. Then there were two or three 10mm screws/bolts holding the filter base on. The mass air sensor -large throated critter- will come out of the intake boot when you remove the filter base. On mine I don't recall removing any wires or harnesses, but, look around just in case. It was simply swung out of the way. On the pass. side of the firewall there is mounted a valve/vacuum actuator.
This controls the flow of HOT WATER into your heater. The temp fix simply keeps the hot water from going to the heater core.
To do this there is a pin that attaches the control rod to the actuator valve body, disconnect right there.
I belive Jay zip-tied the plunger in the down/compressed mode,.
Please check the Nichols site for confirmation O.K. ?
Make sure intake throat is secured in the intake boot, all wires and hoses are connected upon reassembly.

Cool

John I did that and that [blankety-blank] climate control still produced heat! The problem is that the valve can leak coolant even when its actuator arm is disconnected. I just replaced mine, hoping to improve my weak AC [which I did], but it is still not all that cold.

Oh hell, I usually drive with the windows down anyway~

oh ok ok!!! that makes perfect sense why i get hot air!!! But...where is the hot water valve under the hood??? I can get the part from 928 International tomorrow and I can do it myself when i get home from school if I just knew where the heck the thing is.

John you told me the temporary fix but is it the same on an 87 as it is on an 82 Weissach?

Euro,
I'd be lyin', though I would bet a Jackson that it will be on the pass. side firewall at close to Head heigth.
Check Tony's link - the first reply - he has a nice looking site and generally adds flicks. His is also a very attractive 87'or 88' so the info he provides should be what you are looking for.

Hi Eurospec,

Just remove the air filter box. The heater valve is readily visible, and accessible on the passenger side at the firewall. You may want to let the car cool down first. Replace the short ~3” long hose too that attaches forward.

Check vacuum at the black diagnostic tube going through the firewall at the brake booster. Check the recirculation flap for movement through the hole behind the glove box. Check the archives for tons of A/C tips. See this link for Wally’s starting point of vacuum troubleshooting. See my essentials document in that post for concise A/C data.
