VIN 9288200057 For Sale
I recently came across one of the early '78 928s and wondered if this was of value to anybody to restore. I just looked at it and could give you an overview of the car and it's location. Thanks, Paul

Do you currently have the vehicle? And if so, could you give a decription of the car. We needing details.

I'm not in possession of the vehicle but looked at it this morning. The car is pretty beat up. Black with tan, 5spd, 153K miles. Interior is a complete redo. The engine is leaky, dirty and fluids that should show on Min to Max aren't even there. Needs a repaint but glass is good. Not running for years.
I'm curious what someone knows of this VIN number? Any insight?

Oh, sorry this wasn't intended to be an ad. I don't own the car or represent the buyer. I'm trying to find out more info on the VIN in an attempt to help him decide to either scrap it for parts or put it up for sale. Thanks. Paul

vin indicates it's the 57th 928 made for the US market, and probably the 7th available to the public as the first 50 were in-house/demo/test/promo cars
$3k may be a bit high, given the project ahead... offer $1500 and go from there

Thanks for information. Just so I'm understanding it correctly, the US market had their own unique VIN codes and this is the 7th made for the US. How did the Euro market number their VINs? Did they have the same 50 promo cars as well? Any real collector value here since it isn't 51? I agree the price is high.

vin sequence in the 78-80 cars is pre-17 digit universal vin and only 10 digits
9288200057
928 model
8 1978
2 US market, 1 for RoW/Euro market
0 fill in digit
0057 production # in the sequence
RoW/Euro market also had 50 inhouse cars
this is one of the lower early US vin's I've seen, if it were on the East coast I'd jump on it, but that's me
PS, I should have mentioned that because of this similar vin sequence for US and RoW cars there are twins out there, ie
9288200057 this car
9288100057 it's RoW counterpart

Don't scrap it. Put it on eBay. Somebody wants this car (me, actually, but I'm currently in a long term relationship with a lovely, but high-maintenance 29 year-old named Carlotta).
