A before and after on my "new" 86.5: replaced the JVC receiver a PO installed with a McIntosh head unit. Wanted to use a Mac amp, but they are all too big, but I found a Blaupunkt at Crutchfield (they're HQ'd here in Charlottesville) that fits almost perfectly on the passenger tray, fairly discretely, and has reasonable specs, starting with 4 X 55 RMS. I think the head unit's style fits the car well - retro, but so am I...

What are your priorities?

Stock look?
Preservation of cargo space?
Bass at all costs?

Relatively new, and quite nice for the size and for maintaining the stock look are Hans' door speakers.

I went with Infinity Basslink subs in my last two system reworks, as they provide good bass, easily, in a small package, and are very easy to move or remove when you need the full cargo area.

I have Hans' door speakers...now just looking for the head unit to drive them. Prefer to keep it pretty stock looking (so thinking CDR-220 for this application just like I did in my '88) and am also considering adding Hans' Shark woofer with the amp...there is a crappy amp in the back already so all the wires are already right there and while the stock amp is in place it is not hooked up and everything has been removed from it...

Of course I'm totally biased with the following information, as that is what I ended up selecting: Blaupunkt Toronto 410BT.
http://www.blaupunkt.de/index.php?id...fproducts2_pi1[view]=1353&no_cache=1&L=1

Rather stock looking Head Unit, while providing about all of the latest features (Blue Tooth handsfree phoning, build in microphone + external microphone connection, SD- card + USB + Aux mixed mode input's sources) with seperate out's (RCA's for front + rear, as well as a sub-woofer out). 4 * 22 RMS watt output, which has proven more than plenty loud enough for my ears.
More details of my audio set-up including pictures as per my earlier thread:

For a similar look, and similar features, but probably lower price, the Sony MEX-BT3900U (which I have in my GTS) and related models are pretty good bang for the buck ($120 - $150 or so): http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...52921666408664

If you go with one of these, there's a $30 external microphone that helps a lot with hands free Bluetooth phone use. It's pretty easy to run the wire up under the A-pillar cover, out through the hole where the sun visor mounts, and across the visor.

James, the Blau looks pretty good ... new model is about to come out, the 420BT ...

Amazon Amazon

I have Hans' front speakers installed so ready to move forward with a new head and, someday, new 6.5s in back to complete the system

Thanks for the info guys... That Blau does look nice!

Thinking about this one too... REALLY like it...looks just like other current (non-touch screen Nav anyway) Porsche radios:

Far out. I think I'd use my iPhone for nav vs. something like this, but it does look like it belongs in a Porsche interior for sure.

ok..this may be blasphemy, but I was thinking a double din unit with navigation...saw a few pics out there, and looked real nice....some relocated the AC and warning light controls, some did not...

Thoughts? (please only throw nerf rocks)

That looks cool.

Since this is so much like the prior gen (I think CDR-220) doesn't that mean you need to get the altered face that will show at the angle our units are installed?

I put the prior generation in my 87 S4 and had to arrange getting the modified faceplate in order to see the unit.

Becker unit looks cool, though. Looking forward to seeing what others post.

I cheaped out and got a removable faceplate DUAL with HD radio, iPOD control, aux input and a Bluetooth add on for just a bit more than a tank of gas. Bought it from crutchfield just before SITM this year and it's held up well. Not the most subtle addition to a 928 but checks all of my functionality boxes for under $100.

Just plan on running everything off an Amp or two (has dual pre-amp outputs). I enlisted a couple of 20 year old Alpine AMPs, electronic crossover and a bazooka tube for the SITM trip and it was a great 1500 miles of driving!

Let's see....
If the face plate needs alteration Jim C can handle that with ease and VERY affordably!

I don't pay the extra for Nav on my iPhone and have limited data plan so prefer to use something else.

As for big double DIN I am waiting on Hans' carputer for that full on integrated set up! I have also seen some very well done units here on RL by a few very dedicated enthusiasts! That is not for me in this car however.

I think to stay consistent with the digital dash of the GTS....you'll need to find a unit that has the amber backlighting... Some of the blank face units look good...until you turn them on...and then there's bright blue neon or bright white which detracts (IHMO) from the "Look" of the 928 console/dash...

I love my older Blaupunkt Toronto and dread the day it dies..and I'll have to find something else.

Talked to Stefan up at SW Stereo... He says don't get the Nav one if you actually want to use it for Nav. The maps are old and it would be pretty pointless he says. He also suggested (and I went with) a CR210 because it comes from the same era as the '95. It was first offered in '96, so it just missed the 928, but not by much. He also happened to have one of those and it was cheaper than most of the other things and shockingly I STILL have cassette tapes! LOL! Not that I ever play them, but I do still actually have them and they are playable.

He is going to add and aux-in jack on the back of the CR-210 for my iPhone and I will be good to go! Just gonna use the pre-outs so I can go to the aftermarket amp (there is one installed but we will take that one out and do...) that will go with the Sharkwoofer! NICE!

So, I guess now it is a matter of getting everything here and getting it all installed! Watch this space for pics!
