Thumbs up

Thank you, Bill. Yet again, you've saved me time and money. The details and photos are great. I never would have gotten that spring back in correctly without your little screwdriver-big screwdriver tip. You're an amazing asset to this community.
Be well,
Derek

This is so funny how this thread got bumped today, the day I noticed a little rattle in the rear. LOL
I pulled out the rubber stoppers on ea side a bit. Nearly quiet now, but this fix will need to be done in the near future.
Great thread Bill. Thanks for the effort, documentation and pics

A great group of guys here

Yeah, I don't believe the bumpers really should be used this way, but go ahead if it helps until you can replace the tongue. They should be more or less to adjust height and to prevent the lid from making contact with the body. Some people screw them way out so the hatch will "pop" open, when if working right it should open with no pop sound as the lower latch spring shoves the tongue out. Mine has been working great since the above fix, but the upper latch did have a tiny crack, which is now almost all the way across. New part is around $400; used unavailable.

After I replaced the white lock latch, my hatch still rattled on bumpy roads.

Then I got the lower hatch receiver inserts made, and even though the old one still looked good, I decided to try it. Since then the hatch closes tighter, and no longer rattles.

I can't say I understand why this is, but that's what I experienced.

My hatch sits high - so much so that the rear wiper does not engage with the motor cam.

I can push it down with my hand.

Is this the fix I need?

The side rubber guides are not holding it up, nor are the corner bumpers.

I have a PERFECT condition upper hatch latch sitting on my desk, alongside a caliper I will use to measure it. If I would discipline myself enough to draw this latch on acad like I intended to do several months ago, and take the acad drawing to my Porsche machinist friend in Sunnyvale who also happens to have a CNC machine, we could all rest easier. He will knock out a replacement latch housing in steel that WILL NOT CRACK. He will do it if we can reasonably guarantee him a market of sufficient size to make the development of this latch a reality because we are operating on faith that enough 928ers will purchase one to make it worth his effort to create them. So far, my hesitation has been based on both the current in-the-toilet economy and concern that we won't have sufficient market to make it worth while to produce the latch housing in meaningful quantity. Translation: It IS available if I would just do my part. I will as soon as I have some food in the cupboard to take the time to produce the drawings.

Randy, If the plastic insert in the bottom receiver is not broken, then this probably will help your issue. On mine, I know I need it because my white nylon bumper is worn flat.

Well, Ron, mine is also cracked. I am going to try to continue to use it but if your guy can do it at the right price, I will be interested.

Worth trying, but in Nicole's case we found a spacer plate under the top of the lower receiver. Seemed like factory piece used to adjust the latch. We took that out and with the tongue renewed, the hatch finally sat down at the proper height. If it is not engaging the wiper mechanism, you know it's way too high.

I don't think mine is cracked.

Mine also has that shim under the lower receiver. I'll try taking it out, but I don't think it will make enough difference to bring the hatch down flush.

Well, do that first. Make sure the bumpers are turned in and see how it works then. The tongue wears in its pivot pin hole and drops down. Replacing that is the next step. It worked for me.

How many people are interested in my friend producing these latches (upper) in steel on a CNC machine? If you don't plan on keeping your shark for more than a few months or couple of years, it is unlikely that you will want to order on of these. I want one, but am not currently driving my 928, and when I am, I am VERY careful not to stress the latch by slamming it. And mine already has a hairline crack in it. I was lucky enough to find a used good condition one from a P car wrecking yard sometime back. And I still have the perfect condition one on my desk.

So how many can we expect to buy the steel one if we produce it ?? I can draw it in a weekend day or less.

Great thank ok, on the second page of this thread mj1pate posted two pictures ,the pice I need is the one he is holding. That is the upper housing, the little white arm is okay. On that pic you'll see that it has a gray line, there is where mine broke.
