Default Simple Oil Question

Hello - I have a 91 S4 with 95,000 miles on it..I live in Kansas, hot in the summer cold in the winter.

What weight of oil should I use? The Porsche dealer in Colorado says 20W-50/ other dealer in Colorado says 10W-50. Some say 10w-40, 5W-40????

Nicole - what do you use???

Need to do the first oil change on my car.

Please advise with a stratght forward answer like ?w-??.

I know this questions has been asked a lot and I've read a lot of post about oils and a lot of people use and suggest a lot of different weights..

I was thinking 20W-50 or 10W-40 (I have 10W-40 for my other vehicles)

Thanks
Frank

all i can tell you is the most POPULAR oils seem to be
Mobil 1 15-50 and
Shell rotella 5-40
both in the synthetic form. other that that, you need to read the 'novel' thread about oils in the search and try to make sense of something...

There is no simple answer. Your post shows that. Regular oil change is more important than what you use, unless you are driving the car at it's limits. I use 20 - 50 but don't drive it in the winter.

The UOA (used oil analysis) reports that i have seen are very definitely in favor of a 5w40...Most Porsche approved oils are 5w40 as well.

now is this 5w40 synthetic or no?? I use castrol gtx 20w50 in the summer in both my cars, the other(winter/beater/tire spinner) is an '86 caprice classic which gets 5w30 in the winters

i personally beleive if you have a leak that is being blocked by crud from oil, then i would want it washed out with synthetic and fix the leak. The thread was so indepth and long about oil i didn't get much info about non-synth out of it

the 10-30 I have right now is a little too light in the summer heat. I'm going to switch over to some Pennzoil 10w-40 tomorrow and see how it fairs. Not to hijack this thread or anything, but does that sound good? With a warm engine temperature at idle, the oil pressure is waaaaay too low, close to the 1, and sometimes slightly below. A little risky in my opinion. In the winter I have no problems running that.

20W50 or 15W40 are probably your best conventional oil options. I just put Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40 in because I forgot to pack the Mobil 1 15W50 this weekend. It's supposed to be a great oil, but I'm not sure how the 928 likes it yet.

an HDEO like Mobil Delvac 15w40,Shell Rotella 15w40, or Chevron Delo 15w40 will give stellar results...they are among the best oils available for extreme service apps...the cost is quite reasonable and you can get it at any Autozone or Wal-Mart. Facotry fill in the 80's used to be Shell 15w40.....a 20w50 will not give lower wear rates and may contribute to higher oil temps.
