Brake dust baked on calipers, how to clean, 94 GTS
I ran my '94 GTS at VIR a week ago in a DE event and really cooked the brakes.
My calipers are powder coated yellow and when I went to wash the car this weekend, noticed there was some black residue that would not wash off the calipers. It seems to be baked on brake dust. I had checked the front rotors after a couple of runs with a temperature probe in my multi-meter and saw the rotor temps go to about 370F, so they got pretty warm.
Any ideas how to remove this seemingly baked on dust?

The powder coat should be pretty resiliant. Youre going to have to take the wheels off and try to wash them as good as you can. I use fantastic or simple green. Dont do it hot. Wash them with the detergent and a rag, like wash cloth. If you get to some that wont crack, try some engine degreaser. Also next try some wheel cleaner like the purple Maguires. I think that will do it. But if you wash the brakes every one or two weeks, I dont think you will get any of that hard build up.It sounds like they may have gone some time without washing. Now its gonna be hard to break it down. Dont use anything like brake cleaner or thinner, unless all else fails and youre willing to stain the color perminately.
