S4 intake/valve covers refinished
I met a fellow 928er who does powder coating, and he did the intake and valve covers off my '89. The magnesium takes a long time to strip the original paint in a milder stripping solution, then some sand blasting to get the remaining off. Came out great. Very nice guy, David Gagne at Technicote in Rhode Island. (401)724-2230 x222.
The intake came off to get at some air leaks that are probably causing my rich condition. After seeing the leaks, ooze and grunge near the gaskets between the intake and engine, I suspect a lot of S4's suffer from air leaks down there. All the gasket surfaces on the intake have factory paint on them, and when it's peeling where you can see it, it's probably peeling where you can't as well.
Special thanks to Worf928/David Chamberland for loaning me a spare MAS to test also.

Is that color Black Chrome?
If not, what color is it?
I'm getting ready to start pulling things off for a powder coat also.
And another question- did you have to mask off holes?
Nice!!!

Are you going to leave the lettering naked? Or are you going to do the hand-painting thing?

The color is just silver, we could have done anything at all. I think the original color is more of a goldish silver, but I don't really know for sure.
All the threaded holes and protruding threaded pieces were covered with some high temp rubber do-dads. I block sanded all the gasket surfaces, because they were all covered with paint. They are still painted, but it is flat, smooth, and should seal well.
I have wondered to hand paint or not. Part of me wants to be original and understated, but every intake with painted letters looks really good. I'll have to do it when they're installed if I do. The magnesium is a real bitch to strip, and I'm glad I didn't tackle it myself. At any 928 get together the hood goes up, and it was time to stop looking bad if I could help it. The air leaks were of primary importance, no question.

I have been looking at the darker colors, and have decided to avoid them. Silver it is, for me too. And it's closer to stock, which is somewhat important.
Magnesium? Yikes, I didn't know that. I'm wondering if I dare sandblast. Time to do a search throught the archives.
Much appreciated.

Your intake looks great!
What is the skill level to take this apart and put it back together? Is it easy but time consuming, or both difficult and time consuming?

I have a superchatged-related question: has anybody considered painting supercharger to match intake/valve covers? This could help with "visual inspection" stuff in the more eviler states
