Video: how to change a clutch
For several years I've been asked to make a video on how to change a clutch... Well, it's finally happened! I picked up a 944S that needed a clutch - which is no small job. No single part of it is that tricky, but there are just a lot of steps involved. It typically takes people 8-12 hours, and, because of that, it's the longest video I've ever made.
Because it's so long, here are some key points, in case you want to skip right to a specific part:
-Removing speed sensors - 2:00
-Disconnecting shift linkage - 10:00
-Removing driveshaft coupler - 15:10
-Removing clutch fork pin - 21:30
-Sliding torque tube back - 23:00
-Replacing pilot bearing and rear main seal (RMS) - 26:45
-Examining broken clutch disk - 30:30
-Changing clutch fork bearings - 34:00
-Installing throwout bearing - 37:00
-Gapping speed sensor - 43:45
-Installing driveshaft coupler - 52:30
-Gratuitous tunnel acceleration - 58:00
One thing to note, on a turbo, the waste gate and its mount need to be removed from the torque tube. And, if it's an early turbo with the "one-piece" crossover pipe, you'll have to remove that to get the bellhousing off.
(Fun fact: editing the video footage took almost as long as the clutch job!)

You sir are the man! This is a selfless act that often goes unrecognized by most. This type of production takes a loooooong time to put together and Van gets nothing in return. I submit my vote for Sticky. Thank you again Van for everything you have done for the community.

Excellent contribution to the 944 world. Thank you.
After the last 2 944 turbo clutch replacements, I decided I will never replace a clutch in a turbo without removing the engine (from the top). Replacement of clutch by taking the engine out took me less time, much less aggravation, less broken parts, and allows me to replace all the leaky gaskets, belts, etc, on the motor at the same time.

I have sold my 951 but tomorrow am going with my buddy - who has all the interest but none of the experience - to help him complete the transaction on his "new" 944S.....which at 125k miles still purportedly has the original clutch.
Thank you

Another great tutorial Van ! Much better than any other do it yourself write-ups out there. Very detailed and thorough. BTW, you can borrow my tranny jack anytime. LOL
