No problem, definitely looking forward to it. Weather's been too cold to work on it, but procured a laptop that will be dedicated to the car in the mean time.

Finally made the connectors for the narrowband and hooked it up. Once again runs different, idle at 950 sucks, raises on it's own to 1200, smooths out nicely, drops back to 950, repeat. I guess it hits stoich at 1200 and corrects the idle after.

Started trying to remove the lower balance shaft cover, seems like this is going to get complicated.

The Aux air or the ICV? Let it run up to the midpoint of the temp gauge, shouldn't have been using the aux after a while, and the A/C was off, so no ICV.

Either way I would if I didn't already take stuff apart to do the lower shaft cover.

Which, by the way, has anyone actually taken the lower shaft cover off with the engine in the car? There's zero guides or information on what needs to be removed/how to do it. If I have to drop the crossmember I'm not doing it. I just see the PS pump needs to go.

Edit: nevermind, got one. Not much more than the standard timing belt job but goddamn I didn't want to do that yet.

Early car has aux air valve so yeah you're right, if warmed up shouldn't be in play.

Low B-shaft cover - have to remove timing belt covers front and rear, balance and timing belts...PS pump, PS pump hanger bracket, THEN you can get to the cover...it's a big job.

Did you ever come to a conclusion what your problem was?

Still sitting on jacks waiting for free time and good weather to coexist.

On vacation from work next week and a good forecast with a couple days in the 70's means I'll be able to actually get something done soon.

New seal is in, waiting on some front seals and a new timing belt.

Hopefully I remember what nut and bolt goes where, because I had to remove about a thousand. If all goes well should be running by the end of Saturday.

What a pain in the *** job this was.

Ziplock baggies and a sharpie my friend. Label nuts and bolts by component. It only takes a few seconds but it will save you hours.

no worries, Porsche made sure to give you "spare bolts" for reassembly...that's why you always end up with that one bolt and washer that look important but you have no idea where they go.

Every time man, every time...

I'm pretty sure if I took it apart enough, it would hold together without any!

So now the lower balance shaft is binding when I torque it following Clark's specs. Can turn it with a ratchet with the bolt in but it's tight. Only if I loosen every single bolt does it turn freely but it doesn't feel like the top, where the keyway just lands up, always. It still feels sticky.

Other threads on the binding topic seem to have wacky resolutions like "the upper and lower are mixed up" but this is impossible in my case. Other resolutions are "put the sprocket on it and it'll work itself out" but I'm concerned about putting everything back together just to have to take everything apart again.

Advice?

push/pull it back/forth a few times (front of car to back of car, it has wiggle room), does it get easier?

Not really, no. There's no specific point in the range where I can move it where it's easier to turn. That's with the bolts loose. I can't pull it with them tight.
