Default Bilstein-confusion regarding strut insert diameter

Bilstein lists 30mm monotube strut inserts & 36mm inserts. I am under the impression 36mm would be for late 87,88 944 8v/16v and 951 and S2 "sport struts" with removable tops -not the ordinary sealed sach struts.... where as the ordinary "early" 944 struts would except the 30mm body but not the 36mm. The 36mm is too fat for that strut body.

True or false?

Thanks

Here is a 924S / Early 944 Strut, and a Bilstein B6 "upside down" Insert
Part Number 34-000403

The OD of the Insert Lower tube is 38.5mm

The OD of the Upper body is 33.50mm

The OD of the Strut at the top cap 50mm

and the lower section 48mm

I'm not sure what your mean referring to 30 & 36mm ?

R,

WOW! Thanks a million for providing such a complete response, it REALLY helps.

My confusion comes from this:

Option 1:
http://www.tdotperformance.ca/bilste...ies-sport.html

Option 2:
http://www.tdotperformance.ca/bilste...ert-b6-hd.html

I am using early strut housing on a late (88) non turbo. I want to install the stiffest and most durable insert.

It looks like you are using the "Option 1" the "36mm" insert... thats the one that appears the beefiest!

Yes I've got the option 1, but the option 2 is also the same dimensions but differently valved.

Have a look at this Bilstein Catalogue link :

http://web1.carparts-cat.com/default...04&14=4&12=101

You'll see if you click on an application say 944 2.5 there are 2 different types:

You'll see Bil009108 which says 150/95

And Bil009109 150/120

This is the Bump / Rebound valving, the second number (120)
is a stronger / stiffer rebound for the heavy cars (Turbo / S2 & 968)

As my car is 500Lbs lighter than stock I choose the lower number Rebound valving (95)

It would appear the Insert dimensions are the same only these units are Mono Tube upside down and what may look like the piston rod at the top is NOT.

It's the tube at the top, the piston rod you can't see as inside the yellow tube, maybe this two differences are a 30 or 36mm piston diameter ?

R,

Thanks again for your help. I just ordered option 1 (the 36mm strut) and specified that I have the "944 turbo" even though I don't, it's interesting the sites I looked at don't show the valving differences.

Hopefully these will fit my early strut bodies well!
