Its the bottom side/ water pump pulley side, you will see when you remove it. Engine and belt was oily before and after Replacing the belts and water pump with a clean engine I heard this exact sound. I just removed the guard and gave it more of a bow. Quick check is to remove the guard and have a listen.

I checked again and ran the motor, it's definitely not touching, but thanks for the advice....that's the exact sort of thing I was hoping for when I made this thread: people who had experienced something similar.

So, the whine is gone now, after just re-doing the tension the 4th time pretty much. Now there's just a slight clattery noise above 4k rpm, but it's way too quiet to hear in the cabin as just sounds like belt drive noise. It's been doing that for years though, it's not the rollers or the water pump. Weird. Compression is as-new and the bearings are all recent. Not too worried about it though.

I bought the Contitech kit too,and mine sounds like that all the time. Did the twist method to set tension.

Twist method, quik remove idler works great, forget those fancy tools. Goodbye belt teeth, thats why the noise goes away after awhile, lol
