How did you mask off the innards? I really don't want glass beads up in my cam tower.

This. Can't speak for the 944 manual, but Haynes manuals are notoriously awful for a lot of other vehicles, especially anything that isn't a mass-market car. Anything that looks questionable I try to confirm with a second source.

Assuming they're correct. When they're not, it can be a costly assumption.
The first time I learned this, it resulted in a cracked aluminum coolant flange.

Right, never blast anything that you're not sure you can remove 100% of the media from, because it WILL find a way in no matter how well you think you plugged it up. For example, a master cylinder.

Any sort of milled or polished gasket surface should also be masked.

OP, looks great!

I very carefully taped all the openings and the sealing surfaces with blue painters tape. After blasting, I removed the tape, rinsed everything thoroughly with soap and water and blew it out with compressed air.

I had decent results (baking) soda blasting my control arms clean.

Default Progress update

Here are the steps I took:
wire wheel as much as possible (makes it shiny)
glass bead blast the nooks and crannies (makes it white)
clean in dishwasher (makes it dark grey)
For the lettering, I then sanded starting at 80 grit and going up to 2000. Then I buffed with an angle grinder and aluminum polish. Probably could have done better but the buffing pad was getting eaten up.

so now I know I can polish, I just don't think I want to polish all the nooks and crannies to a chrome finish. Will consider options. I just did my manifold in wrinkle red, so I could match that, but that's a lot of red.

And after some polishing and clear coat. These things can clean up really nicely!

Nice job. Hope you don't use that oil in your car though.

In the end, I got lazy and painted it. Only polished the relief. Here's a picture going back in. Relief needs a final buff.
