most remove their AC - i'd like to add one...
has that ever been done?
My car is a freshly imported '90 S2. No AC, i've owned it in germany since 2008 and finally had it shipped here.
Now, with summers in the Southeast, the Targa roof won't wing the temps and the humidity in the summer, i was thinking about cooling myself down a bit.
Removing an AC is one thing but adding it to a no-AC car? no-go or rather buy a new car ?
Thanks guys,
Phil

I retrofitted AC into an early 944 NA. I say, it depends on your personal abilities, finance and will. You should have a look into the original workshop manual, the retrofit is described there.

You'll need a late parts car for the best results and you'll need to do the work yourself when it comes to installing the system. The dash and likely the motor have to come out to get everything in, the dash harness may need to be changed and you'll need to get the hardlines installed, you may need to punch holes in the firewall.

Hardest part is the change of the flap box and the AC lines. The engine can stay in place, though. You may need to disconnect the engine harness and brake lines. If you buy the parts buy only from a complete set. Sellers generally dont have a clue what all belongs to the AC.

I've also got a few complete parts cars here if you want to come down sometime and yank everything you need for your car. Some have the engines removed so it would make life easier when removing the hard lines and such.

I have a complete setup minus compressor but I'm a bit far. If you need any parts you don't get locally let me know.
Installing aluminum lines with engine in place would be quite an achievement but is not impossible since they go on top. Hard lines go trough firewall in the same triangle hole as vac lines for hvac. The only difference is the rubber part on firewall which has 2 extra provisions for AC lines.

can someone post an AC dash? i guess i will need that as well or will it just be to control slot?
not that i really would want to remove the engine, but i have a barn and means to get it out...
the easier route might be to just sweat it out in July/August...

Hi mate,
My 1986 944 has an adhoc aircon system. it stopped working before I got it and it used mostly genuine parts. For the HVAC, they used my standard non-A/C HVAC controller with a separate switch on the lower centre console to turn the aircon on and off.
Refer photo for the different HVAC controllers. the A/C HVAC controller is missing the A/C button, I think it was cannibalised for another car. Note the positions of the recirc and the full heat buttons.

I did this on my e30 when I lived in France. Luckily I sourced a German manual for dealers to install a/c post-sale. Most of the stuff was self explanatory, but I the wiring was made much easier with their steps. Maybe something like that is available for 944s? It was a day or two of work, but well worth it.
