Default Doing the rings, one piece oil scraper?

I cracked open the rings to gap then for the 83 and was expecting a 3 piece set. This one has a one piece plus spring. Is this right?

Chris

On my '82 engine (100% unopened before I got it) there were 2 oil rings with a scraper in between, like this:

How would a manufacturer make the above as one piece?

Are you sure? Those look aftermarket.

That's a google images picture (from a Supra forum), those aren't the actual rings, just the same overall design. If you guys want I can take some pics after work. I'm 100% positive they're the original rings.

I stand corrected. The picture from the service manual makes it look like 3-piece... although I've taken apart many engines with the one piece.

Factory is definitely 3 piece.

Two scraper rings and expander.

I'm confused..The oil control ring in the picture and diagram from the factory service manual shows three pieces. What about it could be considered one piece?

The OE rings are 3-piece. Whatever is in CVR Rally's '83 engine is the result of someone re-ringing the engine with aftermarket rings, that had a 1-piece oil scraper.

Here's what came off my previously unopened motor, mid year 1982 build date. It's not out of character for Porsche to change their parts year to year, but FWIW this was in mine.

I took out a 3-piece oil ring and the brand new one is a one piece. That's what I wanted to make sure of. They are Goetze rings. I'm just going to use them and not worry about it. Interesting how some engines have this style and others don't. I read somewhere that VW used the one piece in a lot of engines.

Interesting, Ive took apart quite a few engines and never came across 3 piece oil ring.

I also have new set of factory original piston rings and oil ring is one piece.

Probably one of two OE piston manufacturers for these cars at one time used 3 piece rings but most in my experience are single piece.

By design, the 3 piece oil control has to be better.

If for no other reason, it allows for stagger of the gaps.

The three piece would also be lighter, 2 x individual oil control rings with no bridge to connect the two surfaces which would have other benefits.
