Default early sunroof upgrade to new mechanism problem

Hi all, 1985.5 NA. Broken sunroof lift arm. Have the older style mechanism, so the lift arms cannot be replaced. I went to the dealer and ordered a new mechanism which PET says is correct for my car. The WSM has the procedure for installing the later mechanism into the earlier cars.

So, got the later mechanism from dealer (about $450) and went through the install process only to realize the small dowel which sticks out the side of the lift arm to engage the guide rail in the sunroof panel is on the opposite side to the old mechanism. Tried switching the brackets in the roof panel but then they do not line up to engage the lift arms.

Anyone else faced this problem? What to do?

For my own knowledge, do the 928's have the same sunroof as our 944's? Is that why to cross post it?

It's a 944. No reason to identify a 928 as 85.5 or NA. Cars identified at bottom of post.

928 has retractable sunroof. No lift arms.

Answers that, I was wondering why the x-post was suggested.
