What are the boxes for? Mufflers?

I know there are a couple of manufacturers (Bursch, Dansk) that make cat-back exhausts that I'm sure are lighter than the stock cat-back. I doubt they were built with light weight in mind, but the factory exhaust is fairly heavy.

I've had the stock S cat-back on my scale and it's about 33 pounds. I haven't weighed the front half but I would estimate it's around 25-30 or so? Mine doesn't have the cat anymore, though. I think you could probably drop about 15-20 pounds off of that if you had a good lightweight system.

I am preparing to build my own exhaust from scratch in a month or two, I'll be using 2.5" stainless tube, a lightweight high-flow catalytic converter, a largish resonator + a medium-size muffler, and a MSDS 944S header. I haven't gotten the header yet but the weight of all the other components is about 20 pounds. I'm expecting the final product to come out to 30-40 pounds total. If you really didn't care about having a quietish car for street use and didn't use a cat, you could shave another 5-10 pounds off, probably.

Just as a data point...

The US-spec 944 NA exhaust from collector (2-1 y pipe after manifolds) to muffler tip, all stock but with an aftermarket CA-replacement cat is 38lbs.

Thats less than I would have thought, based on my measurement of the cat-back section. Then again, the S exhaust has an additional small resonator that would add a few pounds. So mine would probably be around 40-42 for the exhaust up to the y-pipe. That sounds about right.

Yep, I bought a digital postal scale to take before/after weights of everything I remove or swap out. So far I'm at about 180lb lost. I'm not going for the full-blown stripped-out racecar build but I'm hoping I can remove at least 250lb. 500lb is impressive!
