Question Replacement Radiator

I can not find a replacement radiator for a '89 944 NA and it looks like my only option is a billet radiator from Lindsey.

I understand it's not a direct fix and will require modification, but can anyone tell me what kind of modifications need to be made?

Is it minor dremel work or more like some major welding to get it to fit?

Thanks in advance...

Do you have one of these available now?

If you search E-Bay for 'lower radiator support' for these cars you will find plenty. I bought one from Lart a few months ago, along with a radiator fan assembly for my own turbo radiator into an NA project. The best price I got on a radiator was through FCP Euro. It was a genuine Porsche radiator for ~$485.00.

Thanks for the suggestion to use a turbo radiator, but they are just as hard to find new.

I would also rather use a billet radiator than a used one at this point.

Has anyone installed a Lindsey billet radiator into a NA and could describe the modifications required to make it fit?

You can also reverse the n/a radiator support to the other way up so it can accommodate the turbo radiator... Well that's what I did anyway

Over here eBay has a few brand new ones listed.

I read quite a lot about radiators before choosing the one I did. The aftermarket billet types, of which there are two in common use, do cool better if your engine really requires it, but aren't necessarily better in terms of quality (longevity), and they don't fit as well as the OE. As far as OE types being difficult to find, I'm not sure what you mean. There were numerous suppliers that had them a few months ago when I got mine.

tempest411, could you elaborate on your option of a turbo radiator in a NA?

Is the only thing required is a lower radiator support bar?

Or do you also need the turbo fan assembly for the turbo radiator?

What about the rubber seal on the top of the radiator, does it need to be from a turbo?

This might be the way to go instead of the billet radiator.

Let me know what it takes to upgrade I don't want any surprises in the middle on the install.

Thanks...

That's my understanding. You will need the turbo fan assembly as well, but these are readily available thanks to guys like Lart. You will also want to get new mounting grommets, and new radiator hoses as well. The lower hose is different. I think the hose from the reservoir is too...It'll be a couple years before I get mine together, but if you do a search you'll find this swap is not so unusual.

I got my OE turbo radiator here: http://www.vertexauto.com/listitems.aspx about a year ago. It was cheaper back then, but factory new and it looks like they still have them. They show an NA radiator as well, but at $759, it seems like unnecessary $$ down the drain.

the cheapest Laengerer & Reich I have found is 360ish for part number 951 106 031 05 which is what I installed in my 92.

the OEM radiator in the Tribeca was priced similarly on a recent swap out in that car also....which was a modine part.
