Default Did I break my speedometer needle?

I was disassembling the speedometer to replace a broken odometer gear on my 87 944s. The Clark's garage instructions said to pull and twist counter clockwise. This does not look right to me and now the needle will not go back in place. Did I break it? Any ideas how to replace/repair?
